Engine trouble

The engine on my 52 8N is running terrible. It is not running on all cylinders and I hear a rattling from behind the front valve cover. I have good spark and compression at all cylinders. I connected a vacuum guage to the intake manifold and it was too erratic to read. I assume the vacuum pressure should be somewhat stable. If so, does this tell me I have a problem with an intake valve? Can a valve be stuck closed? Am I in for a big repair? Any help would be great. Thank you.

Paul-

Gonna agree with Dell on this one and can only add that it couldbe a broken valve spring. Pull valve cover off and look AND DON'T run her again until you do or ya just might bend/brad a valve...

Paul..... ...valves stick OPEN, cam lobe is gonna force any closed valve OPEN.

Rattlin' noise deserves a eyeball evaluation. Take your cam cover off for a lookie-look. And yes, you could have valve keepers come loose. If'n yer problem is a valve, you may have to remove your cylinder head to repair. Should not be an expensive repair if'n just a valve keeper.

I'm surprized that you claim good compression if'n ya gotts a valve problem.

And yes, your vacuum gauge should be semi-steady. Sometimes you have to "pinch" you vacuum gauge hose to slow down the pulses..... ..Dell
