I know that I have seen ads for backhoes that fit tractors a low as 20 hp. The question is are they worth the $$. It must be pretty small. How much of a pain will it be to move around on the tractor. Often you are not sitting in just one spot. Same goes for those mini loaders that fit garden tractors. They are not good for much more than spreading mulch. Handy to have when you need it but not practical on the machine.

For my money I can rent a mini backhoe for about $100 a day and get a lot of work done. They are rugged and work great! No mess no fuss no tractor damage.

Good luck!

I have an 8N with a Ford 772 loader on it. I also have a Woods 750 3pt. backhoe attachment that I bought with a Ford 1720 in 1989. I did a lot of work with that combo, and had no real problems. When I got rid of the 1720, I used the backhoe on a friend's Ford 1910 (about 1983 vintage). I ripped the theads out of the casting where the toplink weldment bolts on. After this experience, I'm afraid to mount the hoe on the 8N. Some people have suggested that the only safe way to put the hoe on the 8N is to fabricate a subframe that attaches to the loader frame or to the rear axle (where the fenders bolt on). I haven't gotton to that yet. Good luck.

Rich,

I have a Woods BH750 that I use on my Ford 3000. It is TOO big for my 8N, in my opinion. My 3000 is a thousand pounds heavier than my 8N. The hoe can push the 3000 all over if I try, that would be even worse on the 8N.

That said, a bock hoe is SOOooo NICE to have for many reasons. If you can find a hoe that is not too big for the 8N, GO FOR IT! MAJOR consideration... The depth of the top link rocker, piece the hydraulic spring and top link to implement attaches to, is too shallow, for my Woods at least, so you need to check that on any back hoe you are looking at. On the 3000 you replace the top link rocker with a weldment that Woods makes. MUCH stronger than the cast iron rocker original equipment. I would also be concerned about that (the strength of the ci rocker) on an 8N. The WHOLE weight of the hoe hangs on the top link rocker! At least using the Woods three point hitch design, which is a rigid structure so the lift arms CANNOT come up. If they could...SMASH...badly injured operator!!!

The rigid SAFETY frame makes mounting the hoe very tricky. You have to line up the top link and lift arms JUST RIGHT. The tollerences are just the "slop" in the pins which is less than 1/64". With pratice you can get fairly good at hooking up. I finally devised a wood frame to set the hoe on that I coud put three screw jacks under. I can then make the small adjustments needed to line up the top link. Then I measure the heights at each jack so when I come back to unhook I can set the jacks to the same setting and know I am close - still have to "fiddle" some to get the top link out, and even then it usually requires me to hit on it with a hammer and drift pin (actually a broken bolt with no threads that is smaller than the top link pin), then with the drift pin in place I can see to make the final allignment of the top link holes so the pin comes out. Rest of unhooking is easy at that point.

Regards,
Larry

I have a 723 backhoe and 703loader on a Ford 4000 diesel and it is not too rugged. It is a whole lot more tractor than my N. Don't think a hoe would be at all practical on an N. Might work if you are digging in sand but don't think you would have enough 'heft' to do much work in hard ground. You would need a loader or front weight to offset the weight of the 'hoe. Just my opinion. ray

I think I remember my father-in-law's kubota having a backhoe mounted on the three point hitch, with a hyd. pump run off of the PTO.

I might be mistaken, though. It was after all a small backhoe with a 12" bucket.
