I have a 1952 8N. I was having a problem with sluggish behavior. Then that progressed to difficulty in starting. I have to hold the choke out completely until the tractor warms up. Once the tractor is warm enough, I release the choke and it idles very smoothly, however, as soon as I put it into gear, it dies every single time. What I have done so far:
1. changed the fuel filter
2. cleaned the fuel line
3. changed the spark plugs
4. cleaned the air filter 5. cleaned carburetor & replaced carburetor parts
6. re-timed the engine

After doing all these things, there has been no improvement. Am I looking at a bad governor?

i would inspect the points, not just the gap, check coil for a good hot spark,battery is charged up good, centrifugal weights in distributor operating okay, wires all bright and tight

I'll also add to check fireing order.. 1243

and failing all other advice.. do a compression check.

That choke does point to a few ( already mentioned ) problems.. as it does enrich the mixture.. could be anything from bad spark to low compression... or difficulty starting due to incorrect fire order.. etc.

I also find that the hotter al 437 or champ h-12 plugs run better than the al 236? and champ h-10 plugs.

Wires cap and rotor in good condition?

You said " changed the fuel filter"
Did you check all three fuel filters.
-> The one in the gas tank
-> The one in the sediment bowl
-> The one in the carb inlet elbow.
With the engine off do you get good fuel flow when you open the bottom drain plug on the carb?

You can check if it is a govenor problem
by disconnecting the linkage from the governor
to the carb and manually move the throttle
lever with the engine idling.

Did you check for good spark?
A rich mixture is easier for weak sparkies to
ignite.
A bad ignition switch could also cause your
symptoms.
Jumper around the ignition switch to see if
your problem goes away.

Have you checked the point gap? I don't remember which to close or to wide but one will make it run like you described. Next I would rebuild the carburator. I would check the points first since it is the easiest.

Just because you went through the carb doesn't mean you didn't miss something. I went through one on an 8n 3 times before I got it right,

To Me again: That is so true,i have been there done that,especially when one has a carb apart and sees a jet in the carb that is in deep and dosn't have the right screwdriver to git it out,or the threads are bad,and one figures that because they can see through it (even with the help of a light) that all is fine, NOT! many times there are very small holes perpendicular to the lenght of the jet itself,which need to be open,i usually use very fine wire for those,however some of those jets can be very stubborn. I once had a Kohler engine who's brass jet had rusted in there bad,my only recourse was to purchase a new carb for about $120.00 after that it ran beautifully,just my thoughts
