Were there some years where the dash of N series tractors was sheet metal rather than a casting? I have looked through several Ford tractor books and they don't seem to mention this.

I just typed "aluminum dash" in the archive search box and got 199 hits. After reading about 20 of them I have concluded that the aluminum dash was used only on the early 9N. By mid-41 it was replaced by the stamped steel dash. If that's really true, all 2N's ('42-'47) should have a stamped steel dash.

I also learned that there were about 3 different aluminum dashes used from '39-'41 with the key location and starter button location being the differing details.

Check the archives for more details!

My '41 has a "sheet cast iron" dash. :-) I don't recall ever seeing one made of pressed steel on any N.

"sheet cast iron"???? What the heck is that?

The early 9N's had an all aluminum steering column and the dash (instrument panel) was a part of the same casting. These were fragile and broke easily, so they were quickly replaced with the more robust cast iron steering column with a sheet metal (11 gauge steel) dash that was removable. All the 2N's had this arrangement. With the advent of the 8N, the dash went from plain sheet metal to a stamped out formed part that came out and enveloped the steering column, making it smoother and more "styled". The steering column came out through a hole and rubber gromet at the top of the dash. In short, the cast alluminum dash is very rare, fragile, and desireable. You must have an abundance of them around your place to have never seen one with the regular sheet metal dash panel...

Thanks for the information. I looked in a number of sources including the N-series "originality guide" and it failed to make much mention of changes in dash configuration. I have a '41 9N with the dash and steering column all cast from 1 piece of cast iron. I also have a NOS sheet steel dash (without an attached steering column)that I presumed was from a 2-N since, a. it is painted gray and b. the ammeter hole has not been punched out (I guess it was for wartime production 2-ns that had a magneto?). I was hoping it would fit my '41 but it won't. More trading stock I guess.

So, you say it really is solid cast iron dash? I could have sworn up and down all the cast dashes were aluminum. Did you try the magnet test. I have never heard of a cast iron N dash.

Yep, cast iron. It is serial # 9N 74245 I have not done a magnet test but it has a crack from one of the hood mounting holes and I have been looking closely at it with an eye to repairing it. I have welded some cast iron but it seemed easier to replace it if I could find a reasonably priced one somewhere. I didn't realize it was unusual in any way.
Maybe that is what the other gent was referring to when he called it "sheet cast iron" It is only about 3/16ths thick (guessing).
