Knocked out a set of .040 cast iron sleeves. Should they be replaced with .040 cast iron sleeves or would the .090 cast sleeves be better?

Steve..... ..since the pistons (wheather 3-ring or 4-ring) were all the SAME diameter of 3.187", and since there were 2-different castiron sleeve thickness of 0.040 and 0.090, GUESS where they got the space for installing the thicker sleeves? By boring the block. If'n ya wants to pay to have the block bored so you can use the thicker sleeves, thats ok by me. Definately use the castiron sleeve over the sheetmetal steel sleve. The piston rings seat and wear better with castiron.

Modern 3-ring pistons are way better than 4-ring pistons. 4-ring pistons have 2 compression rings and 2 oil rings for supposedly better oil control and longer engine life. Turns out the 3-part modern oil ring has better oil control and less friction for more horsepower.

To install the castiron sleeves, I'd rigg-up somesort of a double-ended wooden plug with threaded rodd and stuff the "sleeve cavity" with DRY-ICE to shrink the sleeve from cold so it would slide down into the block, then let the dry-ice out and let the sleeve expand into an "interferance-fit". That means the sleeve OD must be slightly larger than the block cylinder ID, so everything locks into place. Dry-ice is not that hard to find, use the yellow pages..... ....Dell
