I have posted pics and a drawing on "Parts and Pieces" of a home made position control for the 9N. For all of you with the skill, tools, time, energy, mechanical aptitude, feel free to make one. I did spending $10 and it works great. For the friction disk I bought the same friction disk used on the quadrant. Of course, if you lack any of these attributes, buy one from someone. I know where you can get one for $80.

Rick,
Can't enlarge enough to read dimensions. Also would appreciate it if you'd email the specs.

Thanks,

Rick, I too am unable to read the specs on your position-control drawing. Would appreciate your emailing me something more legible. Also, any more pics?

Rick, Thanks for the pictures. Is there anywhere I could a picture that is a bit clearer or more detailed. I have viewed and printed the one in the P&P section but the details are a bit fuzzy.

Looks like you did a good job on it. I might get flamed for this but it dose not look like the Zane Model I have seen befor. Saying that I have made a few things myself and posted pictures of them. I made some hitches, fork lifts, boom poles, upwards mufflers, and front Bumper weight set ups. All of these have been made befor and they will be made again a little different and many will be just bought from stores due to some not having the time, ability or tools to make there own. Zane made a good tool for the N-Tractor's and went into production and has sold quite a few of them and more will be sold in the future. Because someone else make's a simuler tool this is not wrong. To claim a person invented the design when he did not is wrong and to not give credit to the person who came up with the idea first is wrong. I see nothing wrong with making a tool yourself for a tractor even if it is close in the way it works to another one. Heck look at all the ratchets that remove bolts yet the all still remove bolts, different types of screw drivers yet they still remove screws. Should we stop up-grading things just because one was made befor? I hope not we need new and improved things once in a while and the minds of people who invent should never be wasted by becoming stagnet. Just my point of view. Yes, Zane is a freind of mine also and as far as I know he made the first one and is well known for it. Merry Christmas to All and a Great New Year!!! Mark H.

It was inevitable that someone would post this. I think it's low, but I am also grumpy about how merchants hijacked chrismas as well. I've come to the realization life goes on with or without decent manners.

My .02 is that this looks like a lot of trouble for 80 bucks. For those of you who's time is worth more than a few bucks an hour, get the real thing from Zane.

Take Care
Steve

First. Your pix are a bit to close up and you never really give a good definitative all inclusive pic of the finished product. Second. I hope you realize that your attempt to sabatoge "someone who will sell me one for $80.00" has done nothing but strengthen my loyalty to this unamed person. He has been a friend to the board, and all who have turned to him for assistance. Had you created this little beauty with your own mind, and hands, my hat would be off to you. Since you however prove yourself able to copy the pattern you have seen in print and then come here to claim "Look what I have done!" I'm less than impressed. I'm wishing you much success, but until you have introduced the next "pet rock" I'll leave with the one what brung me. Later
Ron

WOW. I know EXACTLY what Zumbody is going thru. I came up with a simple ignition module back in 1990, sold a few thousand, started a family, let the wife stay home with the toddlers, and then others said, 'hey, if we buy his gizmo, use his ideas and R&D, buy some cheaper parts, we can take away his business, and maybe make life a little tougher for him financially.' If you don't believe me, do a search for flamethrowers sometime on the internet. I replaced my home based business income with teaching at the local tech school, at half the pay, it keeps me away from my kids two nights a week. Let me know where the stocking is, i'll personally provide the coal. Long live the spirit of Zaneful minds, and 'rotate clockwise till proper torque is acheived' the copycats.

I know I'm on thin ice with a tractor here, but isn't the "unnamed thing" here, in fact a home made version of the position control in the 8N's?
The concept was not original when the 9N retrofit was created, so it too is a "copy" of someone else's design, only external. I am in the same situation as you state. A buddy and I have a company that sells an accessory for motorcycles. After three years we now see a very similar product marketed by another. I don't know if it's a literal "clone" of our design, but just describing the concept to any half-witted tech or engineer, they could crank out the same function even without reverse-engineering the thing - it happens. I guess we had a good idea eh? : )

OK I may be dumb but what or where is "Parts and Pieces". I guess I don't visit the board here enough. I would love to see what you built.

I am not interested in making these for sale. There are other people that have versions for sale.

It was a lot of fun making my own and I challenge you to give it a try. Use the drawings in "Parts and Pieces" for dimensions.

Wow, Did you come up with that all by yourself? You must be so proud of yourself. Some people just don't get it. Watch out for coal in your stocking.

Had it been his inventiveness - fine. Had their been even one original thought - fine. Fact is this is a direct lift from someone who published their rip-off in another magazine. It was outright theft of another persons concept. You may respect it but I certainly do not. Bragging on his cleverness in following the drawings of a 'professor' who stole a design may be okay for Rick, and I hope he feels like an American hero, but that ain't my way of living.

They also have similar contraptions in the U.K. and Australia. The one that we see most often on this forum was produced many years ago by other people and is almost exactly like the one we most commonly see today. Nuff said about this, right. Happy Holidays. Ron
