Request Feedback on 8N front hydraulic system

I have a request for feedback from the members of the N board. One of my customers purchased a JPS power steering unit for his 8N. Since his tractor doesn't have a loader and the steering unit is powered by the loader pump, he ask me to build a front mounted hydraulic reservoir / bumper that would allow for the mounting of a hydraulic pump, filter, and priority steering valve...all protected within the frame work of the reservoir. I designed the unit so the front grill would open...and could be easily removed....for access to the hydraulic components. The reservoir is built for oil cooling and contains 4 gallons of hydraulic fluid. The gear pump is rated at 12 gpm....sized just right for the 8N. The unit bolts to the front axle mount with four bolts and is a very solid mount. This unit gives full time hydraulics to the tractor with enough gallons per minute to run major hydraulic cylinders or motors. With quick disconnects on the hoses, and the removal of the four mounting bolts, the unit can be removed from the tractor very quickly. I have the prototype built and nearly ready to ship. I am thinking about adding this unit to my line of products. I have two questions. First, is this something that a Ford (or any other brand of tractor) Owner would be interested in? Second, I haven't figured out what to call it. My son suggested hydro-bumper. Any other ideas or suggestions will be welcomed.

I have posted pictures in the parts and pieces section to the left.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Roland; Unless someone for some reason needs hydralic power for something else I do not see the need for power steering on an 8n. You need power steering when you have a loader on it unless you are young. I just don't think they will be a market. That's my opinion since you asked.Since I've hit fifty, I sure wish I had power steering on my 8n, but it sure is a lot of money. I could have bought another tractor a few years ago for what it costs!!!!!

Roland I think that you have a great product there and I cant think of a more useful accessory
and as far as I can tell she is small enough just paint her grey. the main thing that will decide her fate is the price tag.

Well my boss, who pulls a larger camper trailer and sometimes an equipment trailer switched to a Ford two years ago. His reasoning was the Ford makes more torque down at low end then Dodge. Thats where he needs it most since his hauls are short, local runs. I like Ford's ride a lot better....Any of you guys hear about mixing propane with the diesels? A couple of guys at where I work have heard of it. They said it really makes a diesel wake up! I'd like to know more details about it..... Merry Christmas folks!

I really like the idea of better hydraulics, the only thing is the tank seems so out there. If you could make the tank a bit smaller or L-shaped to go under the raditor and front grille, kinda like a skid plate with the pump and filter designed more like the standard bumper in height.

Still I really like the idea of stronger hydraulics.

Roland that is a pretty nice hydraulic power package but it sure looks to be a HUGE over kill for 8N power steering! Cosmetics?, just do not seem to be there. I have owned Ford tractors with power steering and still own a 960, none had the overkill we see here. Why not go with just a simple PS pump as used on other Fords such as the 600 to 901's that are closer related to your PS system. I really appreciate Your talents but as we often had to remind ourselves in our engineering dept, K.I.S.S.!

Was just wondering if this unit would cause airflow problems through radiator with obstruction and heat buildup by pump? Otherwise good setup, you did put a drain plug in bottom of reservoir? How you mounting quick disconnects, I would recommend on side of tank where most convenient and with taps to back of tractor to run hydraulic pieces attached there or FEL control valve. This could be done with piping that removes with unit and with control valves to divert fluid to front or back.

that along with power steering...he is going to run his hay rake with hydraulics...thus the need for the remote hydraulic system. Thanks to all for the comments.

I am all about it, personally. I have seen your website before, and I think it would be really cool to have power steering on my 8n. The problem is, that my 8n is really easy to steer to begin with, so I really don't see the need, other than I think it would be really, really cool. It also sounds to me like you are adding about 100+ pounds to the front of the tractor (please correct me if I am wrong on that one) Can't tell you how many pairs of boxers I have ruined by picking the front end up a little too high for comfortable safety parameters, so the extra weight will be welcomed. When you say quick disconnects, is that for like a front mount snow plow or what? I am a lacking on expierence when it comes to hydraulic impliments, so help me out on that one if you don't mind. Other than that, totally B-O-S-S invention! Congratulations!!

P.S. Forgive me if I asked stupid questions, I am still learning!

Roland, I could see this if you were running a front mount post driver. But for a power steering on an 8n???? I guess if I didn't have a loader on it I wouldn't need power steering. Altough a guy could pipe it to the rear for lifting wagons etc. without chaining down the 3 point. And the front pump is capable of lifting more than the tractor pump. I'm sure theres other uses for it too. John

Roland, you could build the resevor into a bumper frame type with a pump like the resevor on the old dearborn loaders. then maybe you could get the unit compact enough to mount a front loader. Just an idea. John
