I have an opportunity to buy a 1946 2N or a 8N. Does anyone know what the differences are between these two tractors other than the years they were made?

Thanks,
Ryan

The second gear issue is real though not very extensive. And a new second gear is available. I beleive that having four speeds overides that concern. Simply put 8's have 4 speeds, year 50 1/2 and up have side mount distributors which are more convienent. Brakes are on same side which is simpler. Position and draft control hydraulics. Buy acording to mechanical condition not looks. Paint is cheap! Parts are not.

SouNdguy gave you a pretty good rundown.
I have a 9N, 2N & 8N.
I agree with souNdguy. Best to buy based on condition. One thing souNdguy might have left out is that according to some post I've read the 8N has a weaker second gear than the 9/2N. I've not had any experience with this but it has been discussed in the past. Seems some people have tore it up while bush hogging. You might can find it in the archives or maybe someone else will sound off on this.

This list is not all inclusive but touches the big points.

2n has no running boards.. just foot pegs... though after market running boards are available or can be cobbled up EASILLY.

2n is only front mount distribuitor ( unless engine swapped with late 8n ).. 8n may have front or side mount distribuitor.change was around 216 or 246 thousand or so..... in accordance with this.. front mount N's use a ballast resistor int he ignition circuit.. side mounts don't.

2n / 9n engine may be a fraction less hp based on compression rations.. etc. also, oiler setup on the 2n/9n underwent a few changes, and governor on 2n/9n, and early 8n is not set up for a proof meter drive.

2n/9n has 3 spd tranny, and a brake pedal on eather side of tranny.. 8n has 4 spd tranny, and both brakes on right side.

ignition switch and starter switch / solenoid setup differes between the years. Also differences in gennies. early N's had 1 wire 3rd brush adjustable genny and a cutout relay.. later units had a 3 wire genny, and v-regulator... a better setup. Steering box ont he 9n/2n is 'arguably' more crude... just a simpler design though obviously worked well when maintained.. 8n mhas an early steering box which is a big upgrade compaired to 2n/9n, and late 8n had an even more upgraded steering box.

Some minor differences in adjusting the brakes between the 8n / 9/2n

rims from the 9n / 2n are not interchangeable with the 8n, as both the front and rear hubs are different sizes from their counterparts.

8n has a different hyd hitch setup, and gives you the option of draft or position control.. 9n/2n is draft only, thought there are a few ways to make position control for the 9n.. a gentleman here sells a decent kit I've heard.

Difference in radiator design from early 9n to the 8n.. 8n uses a presurized cap.

late 8n had a lower reverse gear than early model 8n's.. as evidenced by a bulge in the left side casting near the rear of the running board..( to make room for the larger gear? )

Lots of little differences.. different air cleaner throttle linkage routing and setup between the 9n/2 and 8n.

some fender and sheet metal differences.. later N's had scripted hoods / fenders.

radious rods underwent changes.. earliest were ibeam design, and eventually made it to a tubular design.... some difference in draglink / tie rod ends based on the different steering setups.. etc.

minor differences in where the tranny oil dipstick was placed on the early n's as well.. no biggie..

9n/2n and early 8n had only one axle seal and tended to leak oil into the brake drum area.. late 8n had 2 seals.. was a bit more robust.

lower link pins mount slightly differently between the 2n / 8n.. .. and are thus repaired slightly differently..

I'm sure I've missed a bunch of things.. and glossed over a few.. but you get the idea.

Obviously.. the 8n is newer.. the hyds is an issue as well.. buy based on condition though... I would rather have a robust 2n than a beat 8n... the hyds on the 3pt are the 'big' difference.. and an 80$ kit virtually nullifies that differences.. leaving the rest to nuaince, and detial.. tranny speeds.. etc.

N engines are virtually identical with only minor changes like I mentioned.. different sleave material / thickness.. some 2ns had different intake valve seats I believe.. ( wartime?) and may have also come with a magneto, sans starter and genny.. etc. It is very common to sen 9n with 8n engine, and otherwise...

Just depends on what you want to do with it... compare mechanical condition and price. The small deficiencies between the 2n and 8n can be made up with a set of check chains and a position control kit.. .. like I mentioned.. etc.

Check for play in the steering.. brake condition ( some people don't like the stradle brake setup on the 2n / 9n.. though you can usually adjust them so that the clutch pedal actually pushed the left brake when depressed.

check charging ssytem, and look for leaks, and repairs.

Also.. 9n doesn't have holes in bottom of diffy casting for swinging drawbar like an 8n.. not sure about 2n.. can't say.. don't own one..

good luck.. if you need more info write back.. also tell us what you have in mind. and remember.. any running tractor is better than no tractor... like I said before.. buy based on condition.. I'd rather have a mint 39 9n than a broke down 53 jubilee...
