I've read that 8N's with the V-8 conversion were not very well thought of when they were new, and that they were hard to sell used. Aside from the tractors driveline being way overpowered, what were the good and bad points of these tractors.

What type of governor was used on the V-8, or did 100HP in a tractor this size eliminate the need for a governor.

Thanks..... ..... Al

Funk conversions used the later stock 8N governor with gear removed and a belt-driven pulley and special mounting bracket supplied with kit.

I knew people whom used Funk conversions. Yes the V8 was for the most part a wash and they had less value on the used market. Power was in the wrong torque range for any practical use till the rev's were up. Then they were living heck on drive lines. The 6 cyl. Funks on the other hand were very practical, especially with the Sherman 3-way. These 6 cyl. tractors were in heavy use by specialty farmers such as vegtable harvesting where they pulled multi-row harvesters at little over idle slower than one could walk and were light on fuel. They were also good at plowing and discing. Actually the sixes used in Funks had as much power as the V8 but had a far superior torque range and coupled with fuel economy were very practical for those needing the added power.

FunkFords & Gaspump.....I suspected the V-8 had too high an RPM range. Possibly a different camshaft would have helped that. Anyway, thanks for the information. Al
