generator problems

My generator doesn't seem to be charging my battery. I polarized my voltage regulator as per instructions kindly supplied by Dell, but still have not achieved a positive ammeter reading.

Prior to polarizing, the ammmeter would indicate a -2 to -3v when cranking the engine. Once the engine was running it showed a -1v unless I had the lights on and then it would be -6 or -7v. Now that I ploarized the VR, the ammeter does not move when cranking or running the engine but still shows the same -7v with the lights on. Did I fry something when I polarized the VR?

I checked the output screw on the generator and it was already turned to the highest setting. Is there anything else I should check before I spend any money? Is there any reason to consider switching to a 12v system or should I stick with the 6v where the tractor starts fine. I would like the best fix for the money on this one since it sounds like the starter is going to need some attention soon too.

It's not possible to fry anything when polarizing unless you short the wrong terminals together. It's pretty easy to let all the smoke out of a regulator if you accidently short the battery and field terminals together. The ammeter readings after you polarized sound about right - for a tractor with a broken charging system. Try starting it up and then shorting the field terminal and ground terminal together at the generator. This effectively bypasses the regulator. If the ammeter shows a charge with the field shorted to ground, then the regulator is bad.
