hello all, I have a question, I am hooking a winch onto my trailer for ease on pulling the tractors up, especially that steel wheel green one,The winch I have is run from a 12 volt battery, I was thinking of running a wire from my battery that runs the truck, so I dont have to keep charging one,, they have wire included in this kit for such a deal but it sure seems small. looks maybe like 8 gauge,,, any ideas if this is correct or would I be better off runniong a lil bigger wire from the battery, I seem to remember the guys that installed my pigtail saying there was an extra wire there for this type of hookup, I am checking with them I hope tommorow but I cant wait, pat

Several of these guys suggestions are great as always.
1. YES,Make sure to use heavy battery cables, try plugs maybe like the ones shown here, allows use of jumper cables and remote use of winch. >Link

2.>Link Make the winch removeable with mounting pins and slide through clevis pins, allows remote use ,with chain around tree in case you get stuck, and also keeps theft to minimum.
3. Go to RV supply store, if truck not equipped with dual battery accessory charging system, and check out options; maybe solar as this site

Link

4.While you are at it go to Northern or similar store and get some GOOD tie downs straps or dogs.

5. One last point, once you load pieces you usually haul, mark the best weight distribution places with painted stripes for each and use these as reference points when you load alone. This will save time and always make sure best weight distribution and safety.

Above all check the winch manufacturer recommendations on power supply requirements and suggested sources. Winch motors will drain a battery quickly and there is nothing worse than having it die at the time you need it most.

not sure why I couldnt reply to this earlier, kept getting a internal error,,maybe it was the mention of the "green ",,anyway thanks for all the help, nice picture willy, in the picture it looks like the winch is mounted higher than the bed, but that is an illusion right??

I should be able to get this hooked up by the weekend, as long as the snow stays away,, heck it was 50 today,, almost jan in upstate ny ya gotta love it,

yea thanks, I was planning on putting another {additional 12 volt}to operate the winch, I just got back from the trailer place I deal with, also a friend, and his dad races cars as well, he uses a deep cycle marine battery and just recharges every once in a while, and he is using it more than I will I think,

although me and my son just counted tractors and we are in excess of 25,, about half will be restored the other half used for parts to restore and sell some parts to keep this addictive hobby going,I cant believe it all started with a used 9n that had weak compression about 6 yrs ago now there are alot of colors in this rainbow farm, and alot of them earn there keep for a few chores,it is nice if a battery is dead or a tire is flat or doing multi chores at once just get another tractor, its working so far for my wife so dont say anything hahaha,

He told me the same thing about using the "hot" lead out of my 7 pin to put a trickle charge into the used battery, thanks for all the help,so I am not sure if I will even go through the trouble of hooking that wire to the new battery, maybe just instalkl it in a box and charge in the garage once in a while thanks I appreciate it,, pat

Side view of the mount. I took a section of Channel Steel and cut it to the shape of the trailer frame and welded plate steel on the sides to bolt to the frame. Then I took 2 peices of angle iron and bolted them to the front of the trailer to mount the Fair Lead on good and centerd to the winch. They did not sell a mount that would work with the winch to hold it the way I wanted to so I made one. Mark H.

No the mount raised the winch to being level with the bed so the pull would be straite thru the Fairlead Rolers. Mark H.

I mounted mine on the trailer so I could still use the Winch even pulling it with the tractor. I used the over sized battry box and it gave me a place to put the control. I very seldom need to charge the battry it takes a lot of loading to draw it down. I made the mount for the winch and 5,000 lb single line pull is plenty to pull a tractor up the ramps even with flat tires. If needed I can double line or chain across the rear to hook the pulley to and pull loads off. Mark H.

Pat, If you are going to use the truck battery use the heavy cable, like welding cable. DC voltage, as in a battery, drops a considerable amount in the distance between front of a truck and the trailer. If using frame and hitch as ground make sure the ground connections are clean and tight. I have had to bring out the jumper cables a couple times to go between the trailer and the truck bumper. -----
Most later trucks have a wire in the harness that is used to charge a remote or auxillary battery.

Thanks raytasch, I was thinking the same on both accounts but sometimes you doubt yourself. should go with the first instincts I guess, I do have some meaty welding cable, and my trailer has the remote battery, I will have to do some checking to see if the cable to the remote battery for the brakes, will put enough charge back into a battery used for this winch, I am not against using a dedicated battery hooked to the trailer for this, thanks again pat

Pat..... ..the electric brake battery is NOT BIG enuff to run ennykinda electric winch motor. But you should find lotts of room in your trailer tongue area to mount a real 12 volt battery, perhaps a deepdischarge RV/Marine battery. Howsomevers, you can use that lightweight "aux battery" wire to recharge your winch battery while you go driving down the road..... ...Dell

If the battery on your trailer is the small one for the break away brake actuator.. I doubt it will power the winch. If it is an auto style battery.. I'd use it. And that power line in your 6 or 7 pin trailer hitch can be used to recharge the battery. 8 gauge would be fine for that provided you are driving about 30 mins or so to give it some charge time... if you doubt.. look at the line off the back of your alternator on your truck.. it is most likely a small(ish) line.. like 8 gauge...
