My 8N is missing its serial number, so I can't really pin down its birthday with any accuracy. However, I do know that it has no proofmeter. Does this suggest that the tractor is definitely from the 1947-49 period? Were 8N tractors produced during 50-52 sans the proofmeter?

Thanks,

Bill

The 8N proofmeter p/n 8N-17360-A was installed after s/n 8N-290271 and is associated with the same general time frame as the change to the sidemount distributor at s/n 8N-263843. But as you can see, the proofmeter came about 2 2/3's months later after the change to sidemount distributor in 1950..... ..Dell

Dell -- I guess there are always exceptions. Especially when it comes to what Ole' Henry put where, and when he did it. I have an 8N serial number 274593 that has both the sidemount Distributor and the Proofmeter. This is an all origional, one owner, tractor (just over 2000 hours total time) -- came from the factory set up just the way it is except for the front loader which was put on by the dealer. I have no way of knowing if there are any others with proofmeters on 'em with serial numbers lower than 290271 but I got one. Would be nice to think that it was unique in that respect, but it probably isn't.
BTW do you have a feel for the availability of parts for the Ford Industrial 6 used in the Funk conversions?? (early 5os') I'm looking at one locally, in decent shape but I've heard that they are much harder to find engine parts for and so never having had one I don't know whether to jump in or pass on it. Thanks for any info. --Cap--

Cap..... ...According to my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog, 8N's after s/n 290271 had the factory installed proofmeter. Why your 8N-274593 has a proofmeter, donnna know. Entirely possible for dealer retro-fit to make a sale.

Not an expert on Funk 6's but I suspect most engine parts (rings & bearings & carb kits) are still available. The only special unique thing that I know about being "fragile" is the Funks starter drive set-up. The N-Board gets 1 or 2 enquiries a year from people looking for 6 cyl Funk starter stuff.

I recently ran across an outfit in Michigan that was making a front-drive geared adaptor for Ford engine applications (flathead V-8's & N-Tractors) using a Nippondenso Starter Motor. But I lost the web addy. There's not much difference between "industrial" and "automotive" engines except industrial usually have governors and maybe HD radiator/cooling stuff. Check out this link..... ..... Dell

Hey, maybe the old girl is a little bit unique after all. Maybe I'll have to give a bit more thought to the Funk -- All my early memories of the "N"s revolve around the 4-bangers and I kinda think Henry had it right with his origional concept. A good balance of power and function. Thanks for the "Link", will take a look, I'm gettin' kinda ancient, but I still try learn sumthin' new every day. Keeps it interesting. --Cap--

Bill, likely a '47-'49 -- other clues are steering gearbox, front distributor, etc. Look under the hydraulic pump pan for a mfg date for it, also other casting dates here and there.... should get you within a few months of assembly + or -. Check the archives for all the changes and dates from '47 to '52.

Interesting... The hydraulic plate states: "3-26-48". This plate is very shiny, however, and may not be original. I had some hydraulic work done about a year ago, and perhaps the old plate was replaced. OTOH, the old plate may have been cleaned during repairs.

Whatever the case, the listed b-day does match up with the pre-proofmeter years.
