This past summer I converted my 42 9N to 12V. I have a 12v coil. I never did anything with a ballast resistor. The tractor runs and charges great. What is the purpose of the resistor? Will my coil eventually burn up?

Ron..... ....NO, your ballast resistor will NOTT burn out your new 12 volt coil.

If'n yer runnin' the modern 12 volt frontmount coil thru your 6 volt "infamous ballast resistor", yer gettin' just haffa yer sparkies. On a good condition engine with good sparkplugs, you can get away with it because all ignition systems are designed to have excess sparkies to allow for wear....but....(and you knew this was comming) when your sparkies wear (and they will) you'll start having "starting problems" because of weak sparkies caused by the ballast resistor.

Your new modern 12 volt front mount coil is made and designed for 12 volt operation WITHOUT the infamous ballast resistor. Understand?

GITTITT OUTTA THAR!!! bypass it, jump around it, remove it..... ...respectfully, Dell

A 12 volt advocate for the right reasons. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt 8N. And I know how to do it right the first time.

If its a 12 volt coil its built in to it, the resistor is to drop the voltage down to around 6 volts. But if its a 12 volt coil it take care of that on its own
