Jumps out of gear most of the time when going down hill in 2nd gear.

Alfred, sounds like a classic case of the detent balls are worn on that set of gears or the shift rail is bent?. this may sound strange but the shift rail plate broke at back of trans,in turn it holds all(2)shifter rails in place
1-will it jump out in other gears?
2-look in trans where you filler up and see if the part at shifter is broken in two, this is a common part that breaks if you are really hard on the shifter and starter button

Bob,
1. It jumps out of all the gears but mostly in 2nd gear.

2. When you put your finger in the transmission hole, the shift lever lock just flops around. Not sure whether it is broken of if the bolts are missing.

Thanks,
Alfred

Alfred, shifter lock is held in place by pins and cotter key and when you have trans in nutral this part should swing back and forth. as for where it breaks is at starter button hole (towards front) there is a hole that must line up with starter plunger. hope this helps BOB

i am sure there will be some people that will give good advice..few pages back i think some guy told about trying ti get his wife and sone back on his tractor after it came out of first and bout killed them... so be very careful till you fix it...i know people that put a stretch rubber on them to hold in gear.

many old jeeps came out of second and had loops tied to hold them in.... be very careful but best to fix.....

Yep.. I've seen those bunji 'holdeminplace' fixes on old tractor trannies.. and pto levers too. I've also seen a metal jig some guy attatched to his tranny top that the shifter rides in.. had a slide in latch to keep in gear.. looked nice.. but figure the guy had more time in building the jig than just fixin' the tranny.. go figure..
