Wants to die when warmed up

My 8n works great until it warms up. but then it starts coughing and sputtering. Only way to keep it running somewhat is by pulling out the choke. I have replaced the battery, new copper wires, even went so far as replaceing the coil. Nice white sparks on each plug, has a good gas flow into the carb. A tune-up was done in June (plugs, points, cond. ect). Any ideas on where to go next?

Yov'e gotten good advice so far.

Think about the symptoms and the corrective measures.. it starts to die.. you choke it and it runs.. choke enriches the mixture... that makes it easier to fire.. that might mean weak sparks.. that is where the ignition switch comes in.. if it is dirty / has bad contacts.. it is dropping voltage.. thus weak sparks.. Also, as was mentioned.. could be a vacume on the tank.. choking gives you more manifold vacume to try to suck more fuel.. easy to diagnose by cracking cap to see if it immediatly aleviates problem. Next outside possibility may be a cracked or leaking manifold/ gasket. Sometimes the cracks open up after manifold warms up... thus you loose manifold vacume...hard to diagnose...unless you had a vacume tester hooked up to the manifold.. though I havn't seen a repro manifold that had the test port.. good luck.. try the easy stuff first.

Idaho..... ...there are 4 run-time problems with N's.
1) runs for about 1 hr and dies, bad ignition coil, not your stated problem
2) runs for about 3 mins and dies, clogged fuel filters, not your stated problem
3) runs for about 1 min and dies, bad condensor, not your stated problem
4) runs for about 15 mins and dies, bad/gunked up ignition switch. Does that sound like your stated problem of dying after warms up?..... ....Dell

She runs a bit longed than 15 minutes, more like 20 to 30. Then it starts sputter ect. When I pull the choke out it runs but no where like it should.
How do I clean up a gunked up ignition switch?
Thank you for your help
Bob

Idaho..... ...20-30 minutes is close enuff to 15 mins that it is STILL an ignition switch problem. Unfortunately, the $5 N-Switch is not as robust as it could be. I replaced mine 3-times in 1-year before I got mad about it and bought a 25amp marine grade (waterproof and sealed) toggle switch 12 years ago. BTW, the same key fits ALL N-switches so its really not much of a security feature..... .....Dell

Runs 15 to 30 minutes. Could it that it is creating a vaccume in the fuel tank because of a pluged vent. You could try running it with the fuel cap loose and see if it helps. OR Could it be pulling "junk" from the fuel tank into the strainer. Check fuel flow from the drain on the carb when it starts to act up. Just other ideas.

North Idaho. Do you have a front or side mount dist? This problem apparantly just happened for the first time. Where you plowing snow? Is there a chance that you have wet points, especially if you have a front mount dist.and were out in the snow. Your problem sounds like a point problem, possibly wet, burned or partially closed or all of the aforementioned. It's very common, especially with my 9N's to have to pull the choke out to run properly or even at all when the points are the problem. If you replace the points, also put in a new condenser and while your in there consider a new cap and rotor. Good Luck & a happy and prosperous new year. Ron

North, I forgot to mention, when it does this again, jumper around the ignition swith to see if that solves the problem. That will also answer your question on how to clean a gummed up one. If that works, then replace it, they are cheap and normally don't last the life of the tractor. Ron

Sorry I haven't gotten back with you all. 1 to 3 inches of SNOW turned into 7 to 14 inches. Shot a whole day... Upper Peninsula, Mich-Ron Thanks for your suggestion. It has a frount mount Distr.Serial #134137. But this problem has been there since last summer. Just couldn't get to it until Winter. RWKinWI- Read about the 'vacuum' in the archives. I even had the gas cap unscrewed..this last time out. souNdguy-I am unable to find any cracks or leaks in the maifold. Cold or warm. Dell- went to my local Ford Tractor dealer to get a new 'switch'. Was told they didn't stock it, had to be ordered, plus freight. (Customer NO service) So in 5-7 days I'll see what a new switch does. Thank you all for the help- Weatherma (woman) says 6to 8 inches today, then below after that...North Idaho got to love it! Bob
