Coolant leak

Guys,
I noticed a small amount of coolant has worked it away up the stud and past the nut on one of the bolts on the head. I just torqued this down but have not run in yet since I replaced the headgasket and milled the head. Should I pull off just the this nut and apply some red loctite and re-torque? Will this stop the coolant from working its way up the threads? If I just loosen the one nut, will it warp the head?

Thanks

Pat

You can loosen one bolt without warping the head. These engines are old heavy iron, you can get away with all sorts of silly stuff with them. Do NOT use red Loctite! It's thread locker, not thread sealer. Teflon thread sealer is what you need. There is some stuff called, if I remember correctly, Boltprep that seals and lubricates. I have hears of people useing teflon tape but I don't think it would be conductive to attaining any kind of an accurate torque reading.

I certainly agree not to use loctite. In addition, Drain about half the coolant out of the radiator and try to pull the stud out. Us a couple of thinner nuts to jam up the threads and try to turn it counterclockwise. I said try, don't put so much pressure on to break it off ! If you get it out, put some permatex sealer on the threads that go into the block, screw it back in and let it set overnight. Then put some permatex sealer under a flat washer and torque down the nut on top. That procedure worked for me on several leaky studs. My $.02
