8N DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEM

I HAVE A 1952 8N AND WAS USING THE BOX SCRAPER TO PUSH DOWN SOME DIRT WHEN THE REAR END STARTED MISSING AND "CATCHING" UNTIL IF FINALLY QUIT. THE P.T.O. WORKS, THE LIFT WORKS BUT WHEN YOU PUT IT IN GEAR AND LET OUT THE CLUTCH, IT WON'T MOVE. I BELIEVE IT MAY BE THE SPIDER GEARS IN THE DIFFERENTIAL. HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THESE? IS IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT? WHAT WOULD A ONE-MAN SHOP CHARGE TO REBUILD THE DIFFERENTIAL?

THANKS FOR ANY ANSWERS

I stripped the rivets in my '49 a couple years ago. First determine exactly what the problem is by removing the inspection cover.chain the rear axles to a sturdy tree and put it in gear you should see the pinion spinning if it is turning the spider it is either stripped rivets or broken axle. Remove the left rear wheel then the left trumpet these are heavy (a cherrypicker works great) You could probably handle the weight by yourself but I would'nt want to. If your tires are loaded some kind of help is a must. The differential assy can the be lifted out of the casting and the problem will be immediately evident. New Holland has a bolt kit to replace the rivets with. I think it was about $130. As in most work on these things it is tehnically simple but a lot of bull work.
Chaining the axle to a tree is a safety measure so you can get in front of that tire when the thing is running in gear just in case the broken parts suddenly mesh.

I second the rivits as the cause. Have seen more than one tractor shear the rivits holding the ring gear to the gear housing. They get loose, work back and forth , then finally shear off. The ring gear just spins and you go nowhere fast. Not a difficult thing to fix, but the replacement bolts are special and expensive. Make sure to get all the rivit pieces out of the housing to prevent them from getting into the gears later on.

Steve,Pull the inspection cover on the right side of the differential; the one with the dipstick. You should be able to reach in and feel the coupler. It connects the trans to the differential. It`s splined on each end; both ends are female spline, and they`re different.the ends are factory welded to the hollow tube. I recently had to replace mine. not too hard, but I had to remove my ft end loader first; then split between trans and diff.

hope this helps,

Tom T.

Remove the LH trumpet and have a look!
Possibilities I can think of:

Ring gear rivets stripped (common)

Ring and pinion teeth stripped (common)

Bad differential gears

Broken axle

Axle splines stripped in one of the rear hubs

Bad splines on either end of coupler between tranmission shaft and pinion
