30W non-detergent year round here in eastern PA. whatever is on sale at wal-mart! (after all; all oils are created equal)

In warm weather I have about 40psi oil pressure cold, when it warms up it drops to about 25psi. In the summer I use 15-40 as I feel it is an excellent oil. I don't start it much in the winter, but I still put in 5-30 in case I need to. Even with 5-30 I have about 25psi warm and about 10psi at slow idle. I really believe in a light oil for those cold starts, unless your going to pull the heck out of it and run it wide open. I WOULD NOT use non-detergent oil in any gasoline powered engine. If I was going to pull it hard I would use 10-30 and better yet use an engine heater.

I use Valvoline racing inevery thing I have from my 1935 JD to my 1991 Geo tracker I've had good luck with it for 30 plus years and when I have had to overhaul an engine run on it found little or no where on parts but that maybe just me

If you search oil in the archives.. you will find at least one or two opinions ( per member! ) about the subject.

I'll give you the skiny.

Original spec was sae 30, with some consideration for weather..

Some of us have a 'tired' engine.. and like sae 40.. to keep some pressure on the gauge.

Others like a multi weight.. like 10w30 .

Some report a loss of prime with the lighter multi weight.. but that is probably a symptom of a cracked pickup line, made worse by the lighter oil anyway.

Still some use synthetic products.... I hear even when it burns, it doesn't moke bad? can't verify that personally.

Then there's the Nh dealer recomendation.. mine says 15w40 ( just like for thier diesels.. etc.. and it is what they keep the shelf stocked with)

Next is detergent vs. non detergent. Some like the non/d and are worried if they convert to a det. that 50 years of crud will break loose. ( might ).And or rings that are sealed right now by crud will break free and loose compression and burn oil.. etc. About 50% consensus here for and against. Pretty much main suggestion is if you change to det. plan on changing the oil and filter often at least for a couple oil changes.

As for oil and filter brand? Use a good grade clean oil, and change that filter. You can get the filter just about anywhere.. it crosses with a fram C3 or C3p.. napa has it too? donno? 1010.. just a guess on that number.. someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Most of those cartridge filters come with a new gasket.. use it.. and claen the oil cup good.

Also, service the air cleaner.. clean in solvent of choice ( gas or deisel / mineral spirits/ kerosene.. etc.. ), dry, and then fill oil bowl to the line with whatever engine oil you chose to use.

Keep in mind that a side mount distribuitor and the oem genny had an oil cup too.. a drop will do ya.. engine oil is ok.. but I use a litle precision oil can with some 3in one oil.. works great.

Good luck... I stayed unbiased on this as this is a 'holy war' topic.. like chevy vs. ford, footbal teams.. etc.

( I put valv. sae 30 in mine, and hit it with some stp 'old' engine treatment .. red bottle). I use a napa filter element if I have one.. though have used the fram c3, and one from an online dealer...all looked ~similar~.) Do whatever you and your tractor and pocketbook feels best with.
