When you are overhauling your engine, would it be easier to mount the engine on a stand? If so, will any engine motor stand work? And at what weight? I know the stands are for a certain weight. What weight should I consider?
I am open to any questions...

I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight. It was cheap, but it did the job. Something like $45. You can rent 'em, but after a week or so, it's cheaper to buy it. It would have been a pain in the back & etc to do it without the stand. I painted the engine while it was on the stand, too, so the stand is now Ford Red. If you're ever in New York, I'll sell it to you for a good price. $10, you haul, and it's yours. It now sits there in the barn, taking up space.

i used an old big wire spool, i put casters on the bottom, not as handy as a regular stand but it was free. i used 8N with boom pole (no zane thang) to mount engine to tractor.

For the N a standard el'cheap'o stand will work just find. The four wheel stand is better. I would use a heavy duty type for bigger engines. I do not like the three wheel type cause they tip over easy, but do perfer to use one on a inline four, You have clearence fer ya feet. most now are a T type with four wheels , Not as good as the U type with four wheels but better than just three wheels. For me a drip tray is a must. I also like one that is hige, old back not as good as it use to be. Floor to center of engine mount 32".

I would recommend that you get one with a rather high weight rating as someone is going to want to hang a big block on it.The 4 wheel kind with heavy casters are much more stable than the 3 wheel kind. Also the pivot is very important as when you put a lot of weight on it they want to bind so keep it greased well or better still adapt it to a set of wheel bearings if you or you buddies are handy at that sort of thing.I have found that for an oassional project I get one, finish the project and sell the stand.Beats walking around it. Last one I sold for what I paid for it.
