Having just moved into the country and needing storage for my "N" and other things, I need a barn pretty soon. I have my truck, my wife's car, and two ford tractors plus tools and small mowing machines. I don't do any farming except for mowing. My thoughts are to go with a 30'X40'X10' steel. I have called only one place, but soon discovered that the prices in the magazines are kind of fictional because everything including paint and door openings cost additional and what appeared to be a good price soon became a money pit. I need at least 2 overhead doors, l walk-in door, a large sliding door at the opposite end. The company I called uses 26 ga. steel and suggested insulation. Any experiences and thoughts appreciated...Ron

Anybody will sell ya a building. i have brough four, two out of a VFW magazine, one from manufactor and one from a contractor. the first two I put up myself cause at the time I had help and a good friend who new how to erect them. first one was my education. Never buy the doors or anything but a fulley sheeted building from who ever you buy the building from. On the first one I did, the building came in but no doors, driver won't unload unless i pay, i said no doors no pay. in the end I payed up but had to wait 60 days for the doors. lucky for me the rool up doors were good ones but the walk in door was a wood core door raped in metal and the frame was for a 2x4 wood frame. I had to replace the door after a few years. big supprise came when i erected the building. i had planded on useing the extra sheets that would have went were the two 10x10 doors went for a shed. they did not send them cause they said when they sell doors they do not send the extra sheets. So from then on i got fulley sheeted buildings. on building four i did not have the time are man power to build myself. by then i had learned to buy my own doors windows, etc. i would go at least 12ft on the eve height.

I got metal door way openings. Even on my 24x44 stick built building I went back and covered it with metal like my 40x50x16 metal building. I also framed the doors in metal on the stick build building. this all came about cause the stick built building needed a new roof and the sideing was in bad shape, I wanted to install a bigger door. I had a 8X10 sliding door and needed a 10X10. never did like the sliding door. when i got threw with the stick built building I had 5K in the remodleing job. That did include insulation and four sky lights, gutters and rewireing.

Thanks for some good advice. I have quite a bit of experience with "stick-built" buildings', but not steel and nothing as big as a 30'X40' barn. Mostly sheds, decks, and a two small houses) So if I opt for no-doors and "no doorway" framing, will I run into any problems making the doorway framing out of conventional lumber or did you purchase steel doorway framing? I really don't see any problem with using wood myself..... ..Ron

Ron, I just recently had a new home for my 54 NAA built. I went with a 30'X40'X 11' building. I have a concrete floor. The overhead doors are oversize, 10'wide X 9' tall. The entry door is a standard 3' service door. I don't have a slider.

With the extras (oversize doors, concrete floor, overhangs, and gutters), I have about $12,500 in it. I did a lot of shopping in this area, and that was the best price I could find. It's Amish built.

If you need any other info, let me know.

Brad

Ron..... ...ya really otto check out some of these barn planns. They're engineered. You can get free copies to study. You used to be able to get whole books of barn plans from theses same govt agencys. They can even be "customized" for you climate area (wind & snow loads). 'course with the sky-rocketting cost of wood, lotta steel frame barns make econnomic sense..... ..Dell

I have a 30'X45'X12' Morton barn with a 15' double slider on the front and a 12' slider on the side at the rear of the building. I feel if you go with overhead doors you lose the available headspace. With 12' walls and sliding doors most campers with air conditioners will go in a barn. Also big trucks and combines. I would change mine to have a rear slider also, because sooner or later you'll want to tow something into the barn and that would give the tow vehicle a way out. I never could figure why someone would build a 10' barn and install 7' doors?

Whatever you build - make sure you go with a concrete floor. More money now - but you will be much happier in the future.

For your comparison, about a year ago I had a 32x32x10 built, as I was moving onto 110 acres and building a house and needed storage quickly. I hired the concrete work done at a cost of approx. $2200. The building was an additional $6400 +- including labor and materials. This included one walk out door, one 7' overhead door, and one 8' overhead door, no windows, no insulation. Trusses are on 8' centers as is with most of these "package" deals, and I believe the steel is 29 guage. They gave the concrete crew the measurements for bolt placement and then bolted the building to my pad rather than set the poles in the ground. I like that better as there should be no deterioration of wood to worry about later, and I am likely going to be there a while since the place has been in the family for 75 or more years. I still do not have enough storage, but will likely build a 3 sided shed for storage of things like bush hog, trailers etc. I was going to have them put a shed on one side, but they wanted another 1200 for that. I can put one up considerably cheaper as I already have roofing I removed from a salvage barn I tore down. HTH.

I would avoid kits in favor of building your own pole barn. It isn't difficult at all. My wife and I, having never built so much as a dog house, put up a 24x12 barn over the course of this summer.

The final cost was far, far cheaper than any kit we could have purchased. Moreover, we were able to actually choose the materials we wanted.

The hardest part was squaring everything, but even that was well within our powers as novices.

A friend of mine recently had one put up -- I think it was 30x40x10 -- with two roll-up doors, and a walk-in door. They used 6x6 timbers for the verticals, and steel roof trusses. The whole span is post free. I think it was some kind of "kit" that he had someone come put together -- took a couple of days. I was under the impression that he paid about $6000 for the whole deal, installed.

I have a 30 x 40 x 12 Blitz building that I'm pretty satisfied with. Paid $6000 about 15 years ago. Don't know about current prices. My dad had a Morton building that was also very nice.

Sure sounds like a 'deal' I could live with. I am on a slight hillside, so I have to get a dozer in here first to level it off. Although I have heard that a box blade will do as well. What do you think? Thanks for the info. Ron
