Hello gents, Happy New Year to all.
Quick (and dumb) question. I use straight 30W non detergent oil from TSC in my 52 8N. With the very cold winter coming I was advised to use a lighter weight oil for easier starting. Do they make a straight 20W non detergent oil. TSC does not have any like this? Any input fella's?
Thanks....Randy

You might try mixing 10w and 30w in about equal amounts to end up with about 20w.

10 + 20 / 2 does not equal 20
they are different viscosities and therefor will not mix (kind of like oil and water... only different).

I use 30 weight detergent oil in the summer and 10-30 detergent oil in the winter. I have owned my 8N since 1969 and it uses no oil and runs really well. Would not recommend non-detergent oil in any engine, unless it was an oil burning junker.

If you will ask people at the local coffee shop, they might tell you that non-detergent is ok. Of course you can get some people to agree with about anything. I think if you were to ask an oil company specialist they would recommend a Detergent oil say 5-30 or 10-30 or a 10wt or 20wt. It is hard to find 10wt or 20 wt so I would go after the 10-30 myself if I thought the engine was a bit worn. (Low oil Pressure). The people that know something about oil would not recommend non-detergent oil in an N-series tractor. In summer weather, I would use 15-40, 30 wt, or even 10-30 (10-30 if I didn't run it too hard). The old N-series engine is a good old engine if you'll give it some GOOD oil and change it regularlly.

Randy, I forgot one thing.....put 20w oil in the search engine above, then tell it to sort by date. Look at the posts from Dec 23 & 24. Lots of good info there.

Randy, Personally, I would not use a non-detergent 20w oil. But anyhow, here is the answer to your question. Use google as a search engine and let your fingers do the walking. Philip. Link

Man ! Anybody wanna take bets on how many more times this question'll get asked this week ?

Happy New Year to you, too, Randy. You'll get 50 different answers from 50 different people on this topic, but my suggestion would be to use any good-quality multi-viscosity DETERGENT oil...you'll do just fine. Straight 30 weight non-detergent is old technology...your tractor will run just fine with it, but I'll stick with the newer stuff.

Do a search in the archives on this topic...you'll have enough bathroom reading material for the next 6 months...

Now I'll brace myself for all the personal assaults I'll get for giving my opinion....

Randy, scroll down on this page to a post yesterday from Ryan MD; a number of good responses to your question are there, along with a great summary by souNdguy as to the arguments on both sides of this topic.
