Good morning mechanical wizards! I'm trying to split cord wood for the winter! I have a B&S 5 hp. Will run, only at full idle, and quit under load. All help is appreciated!
TIA. Ron.

Yep, sounds like it's time for a basic tune-up. If that doesn't fix it, you may have varnish build up in the carb causing the engine to run lean (no power under load). Clean the fuel system up (or out, as the case may be), including disassembly of carb and blow some carb cleaner through all the holes and jets. Then, add clean fuel with Stabil® in it.

It's a 30 minute job but sure fixes a lot of "weak running" small engine problems.

Mine did the same this fall. I replaced spark plug and air filter and it ran like a champ. Simple, but for the absentminded a reminder.

Points or magneto?? My log splitter did the same. I cleaned the magnet on the flywheel and the pick up with some fine sandpaper, then blew out the carb....being doing fine since then.

pull off the carb, clean dip tubes on bottom of carb, paying close attention to the screens on the bottom, replace diaphram, and put 2 gaskets between tank and 2 between the carb and block, does not sound like an ignition problem, but you did not say how old your plug was, needs replaced every year to remain effective

Ron, It could also be the fuel pump diaphram if it has that type of carb. As these age the rubber becomes hard and the little flapper valves that make the pump work loose their sealing ability so fuel pump volume goes down. These type carbs have a little cover on the side with four screws holding it on. The diaphram is available at most hardware stores for $1.50. They are pretty common on 5hp B&Ss.

That condition indicates that you need to replace the points. While at it, replace the condensor and spark plgs too. Check your air filter and also verify that your carburator mounting srews/bolts are tight (i.e., you dont have an intake leak).
