Low Oil Pressure

Purchased a 1948 8N, seller informed me that the oil pressure runs low. Regardless, the tractor is in nice condition, purchased it and have no complaints. Would like to do something about the oil pressure eventually though. My logic tells me if the bearings are the cause, I might hear a knock when the engine is under load, so I tell myself it is probably the oil pump. Any logic to this?

As someone else mentioned, I rebuilt my N engine about three years ago and although it runs terrific, I was a little dissapointed in my oil pressure. It runs about 40# cold, 20# hot and about 5# hot idle. I use 10W40 HD oil. My oil pressure gauge goes from 0 to 80 in increments of 20. I have thought about getting another gauge that reads smaller increments to make me feel better.

You have gotten some good comments on this subject. Best regards, Rick H. Ga.

'Low' is a realitive term. Low in my new truck would be a different low than my 50 year old tractor.

Many people are happy with -any- positive oil pressure at hot idle. That is.. like someone else mentioned... at hot idle.. if he can see a few pounds of oil.. and, that number climbs into the teens at hi-throttle when hot.. that is more or less' ok'.. even if it is not ideal.

Slight possibility of a weak spring in the oil bypass valve.. but probably just a tired engine.

Next oil change try moving to straight 40 wt oil.. (or 20w50 or 15 w40.. etc.. for those who like multiviscosity oils ).

And check that spring when you get a chance. It is also not unheard of to merely have a bad gauge.. especially if it is original.. a new cheapy auto store one is about 9.99.. like a sunpro for instance. Fits right in the original hole, and 'bolts' right up.

You may get lucky. Try the gauge, then the spring... and if all else fails.. try 40wt oil... just don't run it with 0 pressure.

If you get the time.. post what your 'low' readings were.

thanks

Now some of these guys have high pressure. Mine and many others have low pressure. Mine is 20+# cold and about 5# hot with standard 30 weight oil.
I don't burn oil or have any problems. Many of these tractors have run for years with these pressures. Some people have rebuilt their engines and found they still had low pressure, cam bearings are not replaceable and can cause this. You did not give pressures so we can't tell you much except many times the oil pick-up tube is the problem.

What is your oil pressure??? Could be a lot of thing - bad rings, bad oil pressure gauge, bad oil pickup tube, bad oil pump. If compression is good, you don't blow blue smoke from your tailpipe or breather tube, and the tractor starts and runs fine - I would be happy. My 48 has 50 PSI cold, then drops down to 35 or so when warm - but had a compression reading of 70 on my #4 cylinder. I would prefer a lower oil pressure and higher compression :)

If it bugs you too much, try putting a thicker viscosity oil (like a straight 30W or 40W) to increase your oil pressure.

A lot of folks on this board w/ more knowledge than me about N's will tell you that if the needle on the guage moves at all when it's hot, you got oil pressure, so leave it alone. Seems kinda scary to me....but the oil pump is not easy to deal w/ on these N's either. I'd try a quicker & cheaper fix, like a higher weight oil before I'd consider a rebuild on an otherwise good running engine.

Mine runs 40# cold and usually about 20# hot with straight 30 weight in it.
