Can someone tell by this picture what model of Ford tractor this is? Obviously, this is an old foto, probably taken in the 40`s. I have another picture of it and in the second picture, it shows a headlight, on the other side of the tractor. I will attempt to post it as a follow-up to this message.

I sincerely thank all of you for the replies. If you recall, I posted a question about this probably on Christmas eve day. My question then was about color of paint on a tractor my Dad bought new. He is 86 and was here for Christmas. He said he bought a new 8N and from saying that it was all gray, no red paint, several readers here convinced us it must have been an earlier than an 8N model.

Well, he mailed pictures of the tractor to me yesterday, I scanned and posted them in my two messages. He says those two pictures were taken on the day the tractor was delivered, new.

I was just telling my wife a few minutes ago, never underestimate the knowledge of a group of enthusiasts such as those who frequent this page. Thanks to all of you, all of you have helped.

And, yes, Dad says it was delivered with only one headlight.

Rob is correct.

It is an early 2N (pre '44) as based on the dog legs, I-beam radius rods, riveted wheels (although I think the later 9N's had this as well), and the SLOTTED front grill. The 9N's had the solid center section. Air cleaner and headlights were options on nearly all years. I would vote for a '43 or '44 2N due to the lack of steel wheels or magneto and that it actually had lights.

Running off of information from Jim Smith's website, my best guess is that it's a '42 or '43 2N. It's got a two spoke steering wheel and mounting bolt holes at the bottom of the hood sides which identify it as a 2N, but it still has the I beam style radius arms that went away in '44. Probably a '43 given that a lot of the '42's had steel wheels and no electrics.

Robert. I'm far from being an expert on identifcation. I have a 1939 9N Serial # 1500 that looks identical to what is in the picture. It has generator on the right side, air intake through the hood, I beams to the front axles, tool box in the same spot. However my 1940 9N also looks very similar, but without the air intake and tool box. Also the original paint on mine was all grey like the one in the picture. My guess is it's a 1939/1940 9N. You will hear from others with more knowledge on this than I have. Someone had a nice looking almost new tractor at that time. Ron

Earlier 2N. Might like to look in on Smiths 8N site for lots of details on all N's.

The dogs alittle older in the second picture so at least you know what order they were taken in. Someone probably knows when the air cleaner conversion became available.

9N's had the thru hood air cleanner extention too. That unit has 2N steering wheel & hood doglegs and I think rear rivited style hubs.

This is the other side of the same tractor. Interesting that it has a headlight on this side.

My 41 N has the same air stack as in the picture. So A 41 is my vote.

Someone could have added the headlights when they put the air cleaner through the hood.
