I am planing on replacing the lower 3 point shaft and plate (on the left side if that makes a difference) and I was wondering can I just take the left axle housing loose and take it off with the axle,tire,brakes still attatched, or is the axle housing part of the carrier bearing race holder and will everything stay in place while I replace the lower 3 point shaft or will everything make all sorts of trouble going back together?

Ripper..... ....ya could, but I wouldn't advise it because the 150# tire could also hold 400# of water. Take the Tire OFF, donnna let the tire fall over on ya, gitt outta the way! Not unusual to haffta use a flame wrench on summma the 6 tire rim bolts.

Unbolt the 6 trumpet mouth nuts from the brake and pull the whole brake and rear axle out in one-piece. Now disconnect the 10 studnuts holding the axle trumpet onto the diffy. NOW you have access to the cotterkeyed castelated nut that holds the leaky lower 3-point pin in trumpet. Re-torque 3-point pin to 150 ft/lbs. Tighten all trumpet studs to prevent leakage BEFORE you mount the water dampened paper trumpet gasket. Now slip your trumpet over the studs and tighten the studnuts to 55 ft/lbs. Now slip your free-floating rear axle thru the trumpet mouth and slide the axle splines into the diffy spyder. Tighten the 6 hub studnuts to 50 ft/lbs. If'n ya haffent mucked-up the shim stack you should be good to mount the rear tire. Tighten tire nuts. Check everything and you should be good to go..... ..... .Dell

Is there a way to the bolt through the top, or is it a tight fit to get down there around the rear end and hyd. components

Ripper,At best this is what i would to keep from getting yourself HURT.
1-remove tire and wheel and the center disc in one deal,that gets rid of some of the weight
2-then unbolt the axle housing at rear Plus have this assembly hanging from a cherry picker (AXLE HOUSING IS HEAVY)
3-then remove that nasty little bolt or pin replace gasket too
4-install new gasket on rear housing this is important acts as a shim for diffy bearings
5-you might have to pull axle to get this all back together (bugger to line things up axle in diff)
6-hope this sheds some light on this ! BOB
