I did put an external 12V coil and electronic igntion on my front mount. I did as Dell said and gutted my coil. I cut off the 4 little pins that hold the top of the coil on and cut the wire off of the coil terminal where you connect either the positive or negative igntion wire, depends on whether you have positive or negative ground. I did leave some wire on the top so I could solder a wire to it latter on. Once gutted I soldiered a sparky wire to the terminal on the bottom tab that contacts the rotor, leaving the insulation on the sparky wire, use solid core wire. I then pulled out the little rivets that held down the top of the coil, all you have to do is twist them out with a small vise grip. I then soldered the sparky wire that I had soldiered to the rotor contactor to the terminal on the coil top that used to be connected to the igntion wire. I used the igntion connecter to connect to my new coil high tension sparky wire. Since I put electronic igntion in I didn't need to use the little springy thing that contacts the points so just desoldiered it. If you need to use the points you can wire up the old coil different. You can still solder a sparky wire to the contactor that contacts the rotor but you will have to drill a hole somewhere in old coil housing and route the sparky wire out of the hole to the new external coil. You can then solder a wire from the springy that contacts the points and solder it to the old igntion terminal. That connection will be routed to the negative side of the coil if you run negative ground. After you get all of the connections made you can then find some screws to screw down the top of the old coil can. I do have some pictures of my external coil conversion and of my electronic igntion installation if you need them. my email. is campbdl2@hotmail.com, and that's not a 12 but a dL2.

Archie, I was bringing a front mount 8N back from the "dead" > four years ago. This tractor had been converted to 12 volt using a 12 volt generator and appeared to have run that way for some time. This N had been setting for years and I found it had a bad coil even though it had been running with both resistors. At that time there were stories circulating about the new frontmount coils not being that great, quality wise. I just happened to have a known good coil, not a front mount coil but a coil from a 1972 Thunderbird. I Mounted the can style coil in front of the oil filter, drilled a hole in the front mount coil and ran a wire from the newly mounted coil through the original coil. A new secondary wire to the distributor and an extension on the primary side and to the casual observer, this is still a stock N. Someone would really have to look closely at it to see it is not stock. This tractor has been in use by my son, not a show tractor, for over four years with not even a new set of points so it must be pretty near "right". It starts quickly every time.
I would have no qualms about doing another one this way as round can coils are usually good and easy to find. If I were doing a 'show' tractor I would hide the new coil high as in the hood and front of the fuel tank and I doubt if many folks would even notice.
Look at a drawing of the N ignition system. It 'ain't' that hard to do. But, I would suggest if it 'ain't' apparent to you how to make the change do as Dell says and buy a new coil. The big wire from the new coil goes to the contact on the distributor cap.

Archie..... ...There are shadetree mechanics that gutt their squarecan front mount ignition coil and wire in an external ignition coil. Oftentimes as part of a 12 volt conversion scheme. I don't encourage it because most people that try that scheme are electrically challenged and create more problems than they solve.

You can get real 12 volt squarecan frontmount ignition coils (now). You can also get good OEM 6 volt ignition coils too. These fit and the "next mechanic" that works on the tractor won't haffta guess WTF?..... ....Dell

I have a 40 9N that has an external coil. It was that way when I bought the tractor. Someone drilled a hole through the coil on the distributer and put the coil wire through it and sealed around with silicone. a small wire goes from the points to the coil. Hope this helps.

My '46 came the same way.
I've had no problems with it.
I see no problems with doing them this way unless you just want to stay original.
