Well I finally finished up my 50 8n refurbishing job. got it running and made a few laps around the block. Runs and looks great. After running a while I noticed oil leaking around left rear axle nut. I checked and it's tight but oil seeping through some where. Is this a big job or a doit yourselfer. Whats involved where to get parts.

Looked in my IT manual for the cork gasket that is supposed to be behind the axle nut on the outer side of the hub and surprise, surprise it doesn't show one????

The 8N/NAA axles nut did however use a cork gasket under the axle nut. This is what prevented oil from leaking from the spline on the axle.

I always use silicone glue instead of the cork gasket when installing the axle nut and it does great.

I would pull the nut and give the end of the spline a good big bead of silicone glue and then replace the nut and allow about 12 hours to cure before use.

Do what Dell says and don't over fill the drive train. The way determine when there is the right amount of oil in the drive train is to remove one of the lower bolts that hold the lift inspection plate on and allow any excess oil to drain from this bolt hole. Let it drain until it no longer runs out and you will be just right on the oil level. You can then mark the dip stick to this level for future reference.

Randy..... .my ol'Tractor Mentor back in Lodi in '74 absolutely insisted NEVER OVERFILL you N-Hydraulics 'cuz it'll leak out the axle trumpet mouth seals and oil yer brakes. He insisted 1 qt low was the ONLY WAY to fill the 5 gals of N-Hydraulics. Original design was for diffy oil to slosh out to the axle bearings as you do fast corners and then drain back.

Me? I'd pull the bottom bolt of the 6" round dipstick plate and let any overfill dribble out overnite. Then I'd clean everything up, both the dribble and the axle nut with squirt can of brakecleaner/degreaser. And watch for a repeat of leaks. Then if'n it still leaked, I'd consider replacing the axle seals. It not hard, mostly bull work. I&T FO-4 has proceedure..... ...Dell

Dell,

You mentioned the I&T FO-4 manual, and I'd like to get one. The manuals listed on this site under "Tractor Manuals" show a FO-S-2N,8N,9N as the service manual.

Is this the same thing?

ED, I aint Dell, but mebbe I kin answer yer question. The manuals aint the same. I have them both and prefer the FO-4 over the other which is a reprint copy. I got my FO-4 at a Tractor Supply Co. Store but they are available at other places. Check around.
My opinion, hope this helps
