I'm replacing the starter motor and relay on my 50 8N. The starter drive gear was a little worn so I figured I'd swap while I'm at it, flywheel gears look good.
I got the replacement drive from NH dealer and it looks similar (new one is longer) but the plate and ring that attach the drive to the starter don't jive from old one to new one. Do I need to purchase those seperate too?

Dell, are the washers (front & rear) used w/ the new starter drive as well as the old model? I know for sure that none were in the NH box w/ the new drive I put on a few months ago. Seems to me that I just squeezed the drive.....like raytasch sez....and tapped in a new pin. I do not remember any washers....and do not remember any on the old drive, either.

Bruce..... ...the 2 thrust washers are shown in my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog for the OEM starter Bendix. Since the OEM starter bendix has NOT BEEN available for close to 30 yrs, all betts are OFF for the replacement starter drives. I think the key would be having to "squeeze" the starter drive to install the pin to keep the drive on the shaft. If'n ya donnna haffta squeeze, then ya better put a thrustwasher on. BTW, the replacement starter drive you had to drill another pin hole 1/2 inboard from the original pin hole. The improved clutch starter drive you use the original pin hole. I know I will use the clutch starter drive whenever replacement time comes..... ...Dell

I can't say for sure from your description, but my guess is that you have the new starter drive; that's all my NH dealer carries. It does look different, most noticeably by the absence of the large spring at the end of the drive. Assuming you have the new drive, it's all one piece & no other parts are needed. And, do not extend the drive by pulling it apart!

sanalpper..... ...your starter drive is held on to the starter armature shaft with a roll pin, p/n 55-11365-B, pin, starter pinion drive; and also has p/n 18-11036, washer, thrust, starter armature, front and rear.

When done correctly, you haffta "squeeze" your starter drive a little to fully expose the armature hole to drive the rollpin into it..... ...Dell

I have found plane ol' steel pins in all that I've been into. Compress the spring and the pin falls out. fwiw ray

Yall are right, but the pinhole I got on the one from NH was a slit (maybe open 1.5 mm) and no amount of squeezing would open it. It also looked like someone had tried to pry it open on closer inspection.
So I went down to TSC and they had one with a pinhole that looked "just right". I'm just a country doctor, I can't be dealing with new parts that don't look like old parts. Thanks yall.
