Funk/Oil capacity

I recently acquired an 8n with a Funk conversion. The motor is a 6 cylinder with a tag that reads "Ford Industrial." The number on the top of the motor is 1HA6050. I believe this to be the 226 Cu inch motor. I noticed it didn't have a dipstick. The previous owner said it takes 8 quarts. On a web site for ford flat heads it said the "H" series takes 4 quarts. Does anyone know, or know a good source for information on this motor. Thanks!

My Motors Auto Repair Manual of 1953 vintage shows you may have two different capacities depending on the year. 1941-1948 shows a crankcase capacity of five (5) quarts. From 1948-1951 the capacity is shown as four (4) quarts. That engine changed from a front cam shaft driven distrubutor to a side camshaft driven distributor somewhere in 1949 production. This oil capacity change probably had to do with the oil pump change at that time. Prior to 1949 the oil pump at the front of the engine and was driven from the crankshaft gear. Starting in 1949 the oil pump was driven from the distributor at mid engine.
Hope this helps you determine which engine vintage you have. I would use caution as you may not have a stock oil pan. I have an engine from a 1950 F-4 and it has a pretty small oil sump. Don't forget the oil filter holds a quart.

Rich..... ....The real Funk conversion used a special replacement CASTIRON oilpan that strengthened the engine, turning the engine into a chassis member just like the 4-cylinder N-Engine.

Just as your 4-cylinder N-Engine uses 6 qts of oil for extra cooling capacity, it would makes sense that the larger 6-cylinder Funk oilpan would have larger capacity than the OEM sheetmetal oilpan.

My Dodge Cummins Diesel uses 12 qts at oil change time..... .....Dell

Not correct. The original Funk's used a welded up external frame and an adapter ring to mount the larger engine to the N' series tranny and rear end. Later ones incorporated the cast iron oil pan.

Faxon's Auto Literature has a manual for the 1950's Ford F-1 Pickup. The H series motor in your Funk is the same (just the industrial version). I don't have my manual handy, but it contains all the specs, including oil capacity, etc.

Good luck!
