Jubilee converted to propane question

Looked at a Jubilee today that had been converted to propane. There are several of them around here. Pretty ugly with the propane tank and the hood cut through... Other than that everything is there and it seems to be in pretty good overall shape.

How tough would it be to convert it back to gasoline? What would be needed besides the obvious gas tank and new hood? Would it even be worth the effort?

Thanks!

Hello,
My 48 8N Funk 6cyl. came set up for LPG. It looked like a factory set-up or factory conversion. I am guessing conversion, as I have not seen many LPG 8N's. It had the standard looking tank, cut-out hood and an Ensign reg/carb, all installed well. Worked well, but I converted it back to gas since I always have gas around, but don't have a nurse tank for propane. I could not find the correct Holley one barrel Ford carb for the Funk flathead 6, so it is running on a Chevy carb! Works well, but my tractor "humpdy" seems embarrased by this. My 971 Gold Demo is factory LPG as well, I plan to keep it all original.
Out here in Eastern New Mexico, and it seems West Texas as well, there were a lot of poor folks, gas prices were high by comparison, so you see lots of LPG tractors from the 40's - 50's era out here.

What is the brand name and model number of the "chevy" carb?

I need one for my Funk.

thanks,

Charles

Donzil. I would like to try a LP conversion on one of the 9N's at camp. Camp is 5 miles back from the nearest public road and I have to haul gasoline in 5 gal. containers back for the tractors, whereas I generally have a 1000 gal. of propane back there that could be used. It would be a lot easier having the fuel hauled back there by someone else and the price would be a little better than gasoline. Enjoyed your posting. Ron

Just curious - How is the delivery of propane regulated in a propane engine? Is there some kind of propane carbuerator that is controlled by the governor? Is there an electric shutoff valve? Inquiring minds yadda yadda...

I think in one of the n-newsletters from 95-96 i saw a pic of a jub/NAA-6xx-8xx converted to lp/nat.gas. The hood had a elongated hump in it. I think if done right.. it wouldn't look bad.

Besides.. couldn't you use a smaller propane cylinder.. something that fit inside the oem hood/sheetmetal?

IMO if you can buy the tractor 'right' to where total cost of fixing any problems and converting back to gas equals going price of a good Jub in your area buy it. A large factor would be are you up to doing the work or would you have it done. ray

I wish you would post a picture of it before you convert it back to gas. I would love to see how it was done. Not that I want to convert my Jublilee. Now, on the plus side, usually engines that run on propane are clean engines. I have taken several apart and they don't have the crud buildups of sludge and the valves and pistons are usually very clean. If compression checks out to be within range and there are no obvious rattles or leaks, you probably have an engine that will last quite a long time.

I am just finishing up doing that to a customers 8n. You need the hood, gas tank, carb, shutoff under the tank, and the fuel line. Also depending on how the tank was/is mounted you may need the tank brackets. On the 8n the tank is bolted into the hood. As to is it worth doing?, that is up to you. In the case of the one I'm doing, it was originally converted to LP because at that time the gas company promoted it by paying for the conversion and giving the owner a big break on gas. Now it is going back to gasoline because it is no longer that cheap, it looks bad, and the LP tank leaks. Obviously he thinks it is worth it, and I agree.
