upside down starter

Well, reinstalled the starter on the 8N. Went in just right then couldn't get the bolts to match up with the holes. Turns out the bracket around the starter stuck out on the motor side thus preventing a fit with the housing. Bracket appears to be a custom fit around the cable post and not able to be moved.
So I flipped it over and mounted it with the cable post on the bottom. Any long term problems with this?

Absolutely no harm will come to your starter if you leave it the way it is. If you want to turn it, just carefully cut a new notch in the band over the brush access slots, so you can rotate the band so the clamp screw does not interfere with mounting the starter.

The aftermarket parts world does not offer the correct 8N cover band, however, they do offer one for the later hundred and thousand series of tractor starters that also fit a few thousand vintage ford cars, which is what most rebuilder types use. There is a 'snap on' band that fits, but usually gets bumped loose during starter installation that is easily re-attached, which is what is used on new holland electrical parts. Either way, you'll be fine like Dell said

sanlapper..... .....electrons don't care if'n theys gotta go uphill or downhill to go to work. BUT..... (and you knew this was coming) all your starter cables will be too short. Recommend you pull your 8" long bolts out and rotate the starter barrel in place to gitt the solenoid up topside again. (tip: the 3-terminal starter solenoid little terminal must be mounted pointing towards the engine block and hard to get to)..... ..Dell

ooops Dell it's 12v, the selanoid is mounted under the battery. Cable was too short but it was too thin anyway, so I was going to swap.
Only reason I hate to move it is paranoia that the starter might come apart and for some reason those bolt heads seem to strip real easy.

Like Dell said.. pull the bolts.. just don't pull the case apart.. just jiggle and rotate.

Worst case is you do pull it apart, and learn a few new words, and spend 15 minutes a tthe work bench jimmying the brushes back in, then are good to go.... that is how it worked for me.

Though I will say.. a third arm, and fingers as thin as fishing line would have made it a real easy task....

sanlapper..... ....well yeah, I understand your paranoia about the starter brushes, but trust me, they really won't fall out while you jiggle and rotate the starter barrel to get the solenoid topside. Definately leave it in the tractor.

I'm not certian I understand your fears about the 8" long screws getting their heads buggered up. While replacement 8" starter screws are available, the dealer thinks they're gold plated, but other places don't..... ....Dell

They do make grade 8 all thread rod (won't find it at your local hardware store), but for the cost of it, bolts are cheaper.

Sounds like some one put it back togeather 180 out all you need to do is pull the two bolts holding it togeather and turn it 180 and it will be right
