The starter relay on an N tractor is activated by grounding the little terminal. The relay you have installed is for a car or truck. You have to feed one of the little terminals 6 or 12 volts to activate it. The other little terminal outputs 6 or 12 volts during cranking to bypass the ignition resistor. In short, you have to install a relay made for a tractor not one for a car.

Your selenoid is probably looking for juice rather than ground. This is the way with automotive selenoids. Test this by using a jumper wire from the hot side of the selenoid to the selenoid's start post. Betcha it cranks.

I have early 8n w/cloth wires, found the start wire behind bat,box chewed by critters. I spliced it.It was fine this summer, but now the same problem again,Tractor will not start w/button.I checked area again no mice, rang out starter button to grnd.,and wire to sol.I am scratching my head also, soloniods are different for tractors, one term. and that goes to grnd. to energize i believe. My problem is sol.,or connections i hope. Just to cold to mess with ,been running it by jumping the start wire to grnd,Not much help but I am in same boat. good luck skip
