What features should I look to to date a Ford "9N" that appears to have a 1947 2N engine serial # (*9N293726* if I'm reading it right)? Does it help to mention it has vertical grill bars, safety start interlock, 3sp tranny, L brake on L side but no clutch/brake widget, rubber-covered steering wheel, amp and oil pressure gauges, I-beam (not oval) front axle, front-mount distributor, running boards. Any other #'s to look for and where? Other features brought in and when? The gray paint of the tranny/rear end castings is visible under the all-over coat of school district yellow. Thanks guys!

Thx to Soundguy who relayed me to the Smith page. Looks like it IS a '47 -- tell me if I'm right. Safety interlock starter; hinged battery/fuel cover; rear hubs have rivets (8); different L/R brake pedals; L pedal on L side; front spindle grease zerks on rear side; steel grille, vertical bars; hood side panel has holes at lower front; 3 curved steel spokes on steering wheel; pressurized cooling (at least a pressure cap); 6 blade fan; oval radius rods; no headlights, just black metal ledges/brackets; gray paint on castings under later paint.

So, thanks guys. Looks like the engine matches, and it's the last 2N year ('47). Practically brand new!

Things to check for on a 9n:

Aluminum dash? Aluminum Trans cover? Aluminum hood? Snap in battery cover? Hydraulic dip stick in Trans cover? Grease zerks in front of front spindles? Smooth hubs (i.e. no rivets)? Look on the front ford emblem
--- Does it have a tiny 2N below the word "FORD" I Beam style radius rods? Right and left brake pedals the same? Can you find any casting codes?
--- if so what are they? Roger in Michigan

Dateing your N.... now that's an eye-catcher. Must explain the long hours we spend out in the shop.. anyway.. on to the subject..

Look at your rear hubs.. if the hubs are smooth.. that is indicative of an early model 9n.. if it has a ring of rivets.. then it is later 9n / 2n

I-beam radious rods can mean anything up to about '44 I would guess.

Safety interlocked starter points to a later model as well. Aluminum grill and horizontal bars with no interlocked starter would have placed it early model.. like 39.. etc.

Try the 'identify your tractor' section of www. 8nford. com ( the smiths site.. )
He has a fairly complete chronological history of changes to the N series from 39 thru 54.

Could also post us a pic.. that may help.. try one from the left side of the tractor.. slightly angled profile, and from a standing position.. that way we can see the rear hub, radious rod, and break/clutch setup at the operators platform.

You got it. I was pleased to find that the lights on my NAA were tracto-lites.. originals.. not re-pros. ( My jd and cub have their oem lights as well ).. guess my 8n and 2n are the only ones with re-pro lights...

You do realize that the 2N had lights identical to the Tract-o-lites, but without the "tract-o-lite" stamped in the housing, right? John Smith says so and my 2N confirms it for me. Matter of fact, i'm in need of a second non-stamped headlight, as all the rivets busted out of one and the shell was badly dented.

I'm looking for a set for my 2n right now. So far all I can find is either junk or outrageously expensive. The tisco ones I wanted aren't carried anymore buy one particular N parts dealer I often use.
