Hydraulic Fluid Problem

I've only had my '51 8n for about a week. It runs great but I have a hydraulics question. The old guy I bought it from had the hydraulic pump rebuilt and he said he filled it with "30 weight hydraulic fluid". I may be wrong, but that is not the correct fluid is it? THe lift is kind of slow and it sounds like the pump is clicking. It is cold so that could be part of it. Do you guys think I should drain the fluid and put the correct stuff in? THanks for the help.

If it were my tractor ( and it isn't ) I'd change it for piece of mind. In fact.. any time I buy a tractor.. I take it home and do all the fluids, unless I 'witnessed' the dealer / previous owner doing pre-sale... ( and then I'd want to see the old oil too! ). It's your nickle.. but I wouldchip for new oil.. a 5 gallon pail of a universal transdraulic oil that meets ford/jd, etc specs is about 25-29 bucks. There is also the 90wt mineral oil, gl-1 that goes from 25-33 depending on where you get it.. TSC has one labeled for ford tractors.. wh8ile wall0mart has a generic 90wt mineral oil gl-1.

The reason I would change, is on the odd chance that he put in just hyd. oil.. like jack oil... which has no extreme pressure addatives to cushion your rear end gears.. etc.

Like the others said.. considder the current oil a flushing oil.. and get rid of it.

( my 52 8n pump makes a thumpa-thumpa sound too... from the posts here.. it is fairly common on a pump showing a bit of wear)

If it were mine, I would consider the oil that is in your 8n to be flushing oil. Ford recommends M2C-134D. I'm not sure what viscosity this would be close to. I would further say it is okay to use any oil that meets Ford specs. Don't use common hyd oil, too thin. I use John Deere Hy-Gard in all my units. It is the same oil, and it is a little less money than 134. The noise in your pump seems to be common in these old N's. Just wear in the yokes and bushings. Most I've worked on or know of have rattled for years. Guess if they quit rattling, you have a problem. Slow hyds could be caused by cold.

Unless you can find out what this guy means by "30 wt hydralic fluid" I would get rid of it before lunch today.

The archives are full of posts on the difference between Ford spec 134D and 90 wt so you can read up on the choice. Either one will work but my choice has been the gear lube since some of my seals could use attention.

You do know that the trans and rear end use the same fluid and it takes five gallons? You do know that there are three plugs to drain all the fluid? You do know how to read the archives of this board?

If I got any no's on the above questions keep asking and you will get all and sometimes more help than you need.

Your mileage may vary
