Can I run a 12 volt coil in a 6 volt system?

You can if you want a big paper weight, I guess it would sort of like trying to drive a car with 3 tires it just don't work

Makes sense, but has anyone actually tried this. I'm in dire straits needing to use my 240 tomorrow for snowblowing, but have no spark. I have juice to the coil and out of if for the dist., spark at the points, but nothing out of the coil secondary, so I figure the coil is bad. Was running, but I'm not even sure the coil that is on it is 6 volt. It's not original.

Poorly if it will run at all. You will be putting in only half of the voltage it needs to produce full spark so I would think you will get about half strength spark out of it. If it is a super hot high performance coil it might be enough.
