My 48 8 n front distributor gives me some problems when I am snowblowing. It becomes a problem after about 20 minutes and the tractor just dies. It is not a coil problem because when I am blading with the tractor, it works just fine because there is less blowing snow. Has anyone tried to epoxy the plug wire ports? The gasket seems fine. Has anyone tried to put a shield alongside the tractor engine to prevent the snow from being sucked in by the fan blades? Any assistance would be great. Thanks to the great board for all your help keeping my 8n going. I thought about all you guys while I was enjoying pushing 16 inches of snow from my 1/4 mile driveway at 6 am this morning. I thought about you guys last night too when I attempted snowblowing and my my tractor stalled in the driveway at 11 pm.

Have a good day.

Rich. I hang a piece of canvas over the lower 1/2 of the radiator from two pieces of string attached to the headlights. Let the canvas hang below the radiater by at least 6 inches or more. Haven't had this problem since. Good luck. Ron

Hey ron,, I did the same thing with my 8n,, I also have cut a butter tub to fit over the distributor on other tractors,,,on teh front mount 8n I have found that a trouble light setting by the distributor for a while will help it start in cold weather,,,Jim

A cheap quick fix would be to make sure everything is clean, sneak and get your bosses hair spray and spray the devil out of it. Use to do this all the time on GM's that had the little window to adjust points thru when they would have a moisture problem.

Hey John, I almost forgot about the hair spray. The trick here is to use the cheapest stuff you can purchase. Expensive stuff not near as good. Ron

Ahhh, the joys of snow plowing in MN.
I've been out there more than once drying mine off. And as you know, you can't get those clips off with gloved hands.
I bring a soft, dry rag and blot the moisture from the distributer, the cork gasket and the cap.
Works every time. If it even starts to sputter I just shut down and dry it out. The idea about the reverse fan is a great one. Never thought of it.
We're getting up to 8" today and tonight. It'll be only the third time I've plowed this year.

Had the same problem with my front mount the first 3-4 years of plowing snow. Didn't help running 3rd gear in sherman high. Snow really flies. When she started spitting and sputtering I'd pull in the garage and let her run for 20-30 minutes to dry out. Run fine until more snow would fly. I finally replaced my plug wires with solid copper. New coil with new gasket. Hasn't sputtered in the last 8-9 years. Every summer I clean distributor cap and wires. Good luck.

Ditto on the wd-40 and/or some silicone spray. Disperses water as well.

Make sur ethe cap to distribuitor connection is clean. That's a big source of moisture.

I use good ol WD-40. If my points get wet I simply spray some WD-40 on them and on the Distributor cap. Seems to work fine.

I have used WD-40 sprayed in and on the distributor cap. It worked for me and I'm sure you have some. Just look at can, used to say for moisture.

Remember to be careful with the WD40 inside of the dist. cap as it is highly flammable. I had a wet ford and loaded the inside of the cap with WD40, cranked her over and BOOM! just little pieces of cap left on the ends of the plug wires.

WD = Water Dispersant.
Yep. That's what I'd use.

Mine does the same thing, and it has been converted to electronic ignition on the front mount distributor. Go figure. If I take a hairdryer to it, it runs just fine. It just does not like to get wet. I have yet to find a solution. Happens when I try to wash the tractor. If I cover up the distributor while washing, it does no good. Soon as I start it up, the water from the fan blows on the distributor and she dies. Gotta get the hairdryer again. Next gonna try the spary the EvilSteve says.

Rich, there is a reverse flow fan available that will blow air through the radiator away from the engine. That, and the spray suggested, should help.

where could i get a reverse flow fan for my 8n?in the summer when brush hogging it would prevent the front of the radiator from getting clogged, not to mention sucking all that hot engine air onto the operator.would the reverse flow fan have any effect on keeping the engine at proper temperature?

I've seen the fans come up on ebay from time to time. However, I doubt there would be any benefit when bush hogging. You would just plug the back of the radiator instead of the front.

Bob, I have a six blade reversed fan. Man it really does well. No hot air blowin back on ya ... No, I thought like you that the back side would fill full of stuff. Mine hasn't. Ran it thru hi ( 2 - 3 feet ) weeds for hours ( kept checking to make sure ) Not very much built up in the cavity. I don't know why...

I used a reverse flow fan on another application involving blowing snow (A flathead V-8 Ford truck with Marmon Herrington four wheel drive with a front mounted 2-stage snowblower).

The addition of the reverse flow fan COMPLETELY eliminated moisture problems with the front-mount distributor on that truck. I makes quite a difference when you're not pulling snow through the warm radiator, and melting it!

With a reverse flow fan on an 'N, you could rig up some side curtains from the hood down alongside the engine, and keep EVERYTHING around the engine dry.

Most marine stores an several auto parts stores carry a spray product that protect electrical components from moisture and from corrosion. They provide a thin layer of waterproofing and seal small cracks/gaps.
