You've gotten good info on how to remove the starter. Most likely though, you will have to get it unstuck from the flywheel.

to do this, place the tractor in high gear, and then grab onto the back tire and start rocking it back and forth.. vigorously.... it will pop loose.. but your arms will be tired..

Go to New Holland dealer or sponsor of this site or Amazon .com and look for FO4 I&T. This is the bible to this series...and this site!

Is your drive stuck in the engaged position? With my 2N the hole for the starter was shaped like an egg to remove/install the starter. The drive pulls into the ring gear. The perfect angle will get it out and install it, go easy on it and when you least expect it, it will come out.

Oh, and by the way, the head bone is connected to the foot bone as far as the N's are concerned. If one problem did not lead to another this site wouldn't flourish the way it does. Enjoy your problems(seems funny to say that)each one will make you more of an expert and loyal N lover as they are conquered!

Art, click on the left of this page on Tractor Manuals; the FO-4 manual will be most helpful. Regarding the starter.....remove the 2 bolts holding the oil canister on the block; no need to remove the lines or the canister; just remove the bolts. Remove the dipstick. The starter should come out. If not, get a 5 gallon bucket, and drain the block from the petcock in front of the starter. Then, remove the petcock. Sometimes you can get the starter off w/o removing the petcock, so it's worth a try. And, if you are replacing the bendix, get the new clutch drive. Also, be careful that you do not remove the 2 long bolts from the starter when you are taking it off the block; you might want to place 2 nuts on those bolts to keep the starter together.
