51 8N almost staling

I was going to us my 51 8N for some plowing last night but it almost stalled when I tried to go up a little hill in my driveway in 1st gear. It also almost stalled a weeks ago on the flat part of the drive in 2nd and 3rd gear (didn't try 4th) but 1st and reverse worked fine. In both cases I pushed the clutch in when the engine started to cut out and it reluctantly returned to the original RPM. In both cases the outside temperature was in the mid teens and I had let the tractor warm up for appox 15 min. All the gears worked fine several weeks ago but the temperature was around 40. Is this just a cold weather thing or is there something else wrong? This tractor is slated to go to the mountains on Saturday for some snow plowing duties and I would like to get the problem rectified before then.

I would also look at fuel flow at the bottom of the carb.. sounds like it may be starving.. Check the oil bath air cleaner for water (frozen ) as well.

Ice in carb? there was a message just a bit down the page about that..

Ryan, In all probability the gears have nothing to do with your problem. Reason why it is working in low and reverse is that they are the two lowest gears and with the reduction in power, your tractor doesn't have enough power to move in the higher gears. Have you been experiencing low power for a long time or did it come on suddenly? If suddenly, I would look at something electrical, such as bad points, maybe even bad plugs that would fire in warm temps but not very well in cold temps. Do you have a side or front mount Distributor? If a front, you could have some moisture inside the cap.Easy to fix, take it off and wipe it out and replace. When you have it off, might want to replace the rotor. The previous post has some good ideas. Post back and let us know what is happening and if possible provide more info. Ron

Ron,

Thanks for the suggestions. I would agree that the gears are not the problem. I have only had the tractor for about a month so I don't know the history. I do know that it ran great the two times I used it with temperatures over 40 degrees. It is a side mount distributor. I am going to try a couple of the suggestions to see if they make a difference.

P.S. My mother's family is from Wakefield, MI and I spent a lot of time there. The UP is a great area.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, I'd try the simple stuff first. Check for gas.....like in a nearly full tank. Then, pour in some dry gas. Pull the plug on the carb bowl & drain it. Remove the sediment bowl & clean the filter. Lastly, check the point gap. All of this will take 15 minutes; see what happens & get back on the board if none of the above works.
