Here is the way it works:

Way back when, in a galaxy far far away, Henry Ford started making tractors but he had to keep his tractor bank records separate from the auto bank records. They started to assign codes for different projects. "N" ended up being the code for Tractors. The number in front of "N" tells the first year that that series was put into production. The 9N was first and was started in 1939, the 2N replaced it (but was almost identical except for wartime versions with steel wheels among other things) and began in 1942. The 8N was actually begun in late 1947 but as a 1948 year model. Now you know how they got those numbers!

Not a Ford man? Your missing a treat if you've never owned a Ford 9,2,or 8N. I never buy Ford trucks or automobiles. (If it don't say JEEP on the hood I don't want it)but I Love my Ford 2N. Them N tractors just might be the best product Ford ever produced.
