Machine shop replaced evertything inside my 8N engine (except the crank was turned). Included was a new oil pump and oil relief valve and spring. The oil pump was align bored. The machinest told me that he placed two shims inside the nut where the oil pressure relief valve spring rests. He said that the additional tension on the spring would raise oil pressure. He said that if the oil pressure is too high when I start the engine, I should just remove one of the shims. Are these shims a bad or good idea? Would they increase oil pressure?

It's best not to monkey around with the new pre-set spring. All the shims are doing is compressing the spring and making it need higher oil pressure to work. The thing is with a new overhaul you should be ok oil pressure wise. What is the cold and warm press without the shims? Is the oil press guage new or old and what was the oil press before the overhaul? etc. You will see oil pressures reported on this site ranging from 10 to 60 psi warm. These old 8N's are just like women, they are all different and you cant figure them out.
