restoring my 1950 8n and took the starter off to paint and it says 12 volt. Does this mean that it has a 12v conversion already?

In 54 years there is a lot of chance for mix match on parts. Generally if you take a 6 volt starter to a good rebuild shop and the shop person knows the starter is running on 12 volt they will ask if you want it changed to 12 volt windings; at least mine does. Either way, 6-12, if it works well don't worry about it. JMHO

It has to because it was originally 6 volt.
