I am looking for a Sherman Underdrive Transmission for a 1949 8N. Any suggestions of where to find one would be appreciated.

Rich..... ....you'll probably have better luck finding the more common 3-speed Sherman which has a -25% underdrive gear. My understanding the underdrive didn't sell very well 'cuz it came out about the same time as the 3-speed and was about the same cost..... .....Dell

GOOD luck! Everybody and his dog wants the answer to THAT question! How's this for luck... I answered an ad for Sherman combos in another site's classifieds, bought 3 sight unseen for a real decent price. Somehow, I managed to miscommunicate to the seller and he sent 3 more! (COD of course) Well.... One of the second set of combos turned out to be a step-down only and I couldn't be more tickled. Gonna put it my Jubilee and teach my 10 yr old to drive 'er. Selling the others one at a time on eBay.
BTW... Some time ago, I talked with an OLD timer that repairs/sells Shermans and he told me where to contact a guy that has a unit he rebuilt for him. Expect to pay a cool grand tho. E-mail me if this doesn't shock you.

Congrats on the unexpected bonus. I looked at the unit on Ebay which I assume is yours. I guess that's a combo unit. I may end up going that way in the end.

Rich,

I don't have a unit listed right now. BE CAREFUL of the guy that has the overdrive listed with no handle. It's a cable operated unit and he just happens to forget to mention that! Buyer beware. Learn as much as you can here and in the archives before you plunk down any $$$. You CAN end up with something you don't need/can't use and not much choice but to eat it.

Good luck.

Jim,

Thanks for the heads up...I noticed the missing shifter and wondered about that. I am not convinced the Sherman Transmission is what I need for my application (I use the 8N for mowing with a deck, and the Underdrive would slow the blade speed to the point where it may not cut effectively). So for now, I'm just gathering information.

Thanks again.

Rich

Rich,

Look for a Howard and then treat it WELL. It's a bit delicate.

I use the tractor mainly for mowing with a deck mower. I'm not sure the Sherman will really help as it lowers the PTO speed which may make the blades turn too slow for optimal cutting. I was looking for other ways to increase the power by 5-10%, but doesn't look like that's possible without doing a conversion to a 6.
