I have a rusted but complete 8n drive train sitting in my property. Got to thinking that I have to rebuild my 9n hydraulics soon and why not rebuild the 8n hyd and transplant the unit into the 9n. Did a little searching through the archives and found myself at Zane's website. There he quotes Llamas who says:

"...The only other alternative has been to find a junked 8N tractor and exchange the entire hydraulic system. All the parts interchange between the two models, but the system was so much modified to add the position control that the entire hitch system, including the pump, must be exchanged."

So, has anyone performed this transplant? If so, anything to watch out for?

Phil,
My 2N had 8N covers and pump on it when I bought it. The only problem I see is that the linkage for the position control on the underside of the cover hits a cast web on the inside of the tractor . When I got my tractor , you could not move the position control lever at all . I cut out the web and it works fine . Just take a look inside both tractors when you take of the lift cover and you should see the difference .

Not much to watch out for at all. It's pretty straight forward. The toughest and most tedious part is getting the adjustments correct. Read, reread, and read one more time the FO-4 manual's 8N hydraulics section. It's a bunch easier to do if you study the linkage and diagrams for an hour or so to get a good feel for how it works and why you are adjusting the various parts and what you are trying to accomplish. Make sure you replace the much discussed cam follower pin. It's cheap. Like, 2 bucks or so cheap. Too cheap to knock it out and just turn it around. We swapped 8N hydraulics into a Ferguson TO-30 a couple years ago. It just bolted right in. Your 9N would be the same way. Your PTO shaft can stay as well as all the external components, but you will need the entire lift cover and linkage assembly and the pump.
