Well my 8N was sitting for about 3mos when we needed it. Went to start but batt was low and only cranked a few times. I decided to jump with my "02" Chevy of course not thinking 6Volt vs. 12volt and of course..... .. If you could venture a guess what do I need to replace? Any ideas anyone?

Yes, a good friend did the same thing to his 8N, only repeatedly until it never cranked again.

I ended up replacing points and the resistor block on the back side of the dash. I suspect a new resistor block is all it needed. Replacing the points was only for routine maintenance.

This is the second tractor that I've fixed for him. He blew the head gasket in his small diesel about a few months earlier trying to start with using the old "gas on a rag at the intake" trick.

Oh well, now I have access to TWO tractors for planting my pea patches for deer.

Worst case? Starter, voltage regulator, amp meter, coil, points & ignition switch. In other words, the entire electrical system except the generator. Likely case? Nothing. These are tough old tractors, and you probably would have seen/smelled something burning before you did all that damage. Of course, if you jumped to the starter directly had did not turn the starter for 3 minutes straight, no damage. Most likely damage.....based upon my buddy doing it twice....is the VR only. $35, cheap lesson in tractor electronics.

Need more info. How did you hook it up? Directly across the battery? If so, + to + and - to - or other way around? What smoked, sparked, etc.? What does it do now? Turns over but will not crank? What?

Mike..... ...starter don't care, positive or negative ground, all turn the same direction. One of the principle reasons people convert to 12 volts is 12 volts onnna 6 volt starter motor really spins that starter for faster starts. If'n it takes more than 15 seconds to start your engine, ya better be for finding out why..... ...Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reason
