Boy, it has been far too long since I've been on this board!!! Sure have missed you guys!!! (You know, the usual suspects!) I miss being a regular here, and in a way, I hope work just lets up a little bit, so I can be on here more often!!! I hope every one is well, and I have a lot of catching up to do!!!
Anyway, I wasn't sure who to ask, so you guys seem to be my best bet!!! As some of you may remember, I'm also really into vintage garden tractors... I stumbled across one that is a bit rare, and at this piont, I know if I want to clean the top of the piston, and inside the head from carbon build up, I will need to make a new head gasket. (It's a Standard Twin) How would you guys go about making a head gasket???
Also, the "spec" oil that should be used in the engine, tranny, and rear end is "MobilOil AF" Any idea as to what would be a modern day replacement???
Thanks in advance, Adam

No, not "rattle-can" paint. Regular liquid paint. Most any paint or hardware store will have pints and quarts of "Aluminum paint" for sale. A pint would have enough of the aluminum "fines", in the bottom before shaken up, to do the job. A quart will for sure, even if you're messy.

See the link below. These guys will make you a head gasket if you send them a template or a tracing. I would contact them and see what they are going to need and what they are going to charge.

Your mileage may vary

Back in the 1940s, when I was a kid, when WW11 was raging parts were often not available. I can remember my dad making head gaskets from copper sheeting. If I remember right he would paint the gasket with aluminum paint. Don't know what kind of chemical reaction between the paint and copper there may have been. I also remember him saving the old gasket if possible and painting it with aluminum paint, and reusing it. Ain't it fun!

As Ray suggests, Aluminum Paint works well to renew a used head gasket if you must. The most effective way of doing it is this: DO NOT shake up or mix the paint first. Just open the can and use something to scrape some of the "heavy ends" off the bottom. Then use a small brush to spread this pasty Aluminum gunk from the bottom of the can evenly all over both sides of the gasket and put it back together. Normal torque settings. Works well, and can be taken apart again no problem. Used to use the "quenched" copper sheet method too, but it takes more time and effort. Of course, once you have made one it's reuseable by re-quenching first and if you pull the engine down often as we did the racing engines then it can save time in the long run. --Cap--

Call an established auto/farm place and ask them to cross reference the mobil A.F. oil or e-mail mobil and ask them. They have a good web site. As for the head gasket I suppose you could always use copper sheet. When I used to race motorcycles all the single cylinder bikes used copper gaskets. Probably should be the same thickness as what ever is in there now. Just make sure it is soft. If the copper seems stiff heat it and quench it in water to soften. Also check out the G. tractor sites, lots or good people there--might have the parts needed.
