I have a 1944 2N. I am trying to rebuild the engine. I am considering ordering the Comprehensive Overhaul Kit from ATS. The block and crankshaft are at the machine shop to get the measurements for the bearings (of which we need .010 bearings). The crankshaft has been turned, the block has been vated, and the head checked. The guy at the machine shop said he would rather order his sleeves and not use the sleeves in the kit? Why I really don't know.... If anyone has used this kit, have you found these sleeves inadequate? We need to go back with the .090 sleeves. Also on the sleeves, everything I read says that the machine shop will need to install them. Has anyone install their own sleeves? Need to go back and visit again with the machine shop....can anyone give me some insight on this matter.

Thank, Roper Bob

Roper Bob..... ...N-Sleeves are an "interferance fit", meaning the sleeve OD is bigger than the hole innna the block. So you haffta "shrink" the sleeve with COLD or expand the block with heat. Problem with expanding the block with heat, is the heat transfers to the sleeve before you can gittitt seated in the block. Then ya haffta hammer it home.

I feel the best way is to create youself a DRY-ICE "shrinker-spool" outta 2 round pieces of wood to fit inside the sleeve and a long threaded rod. You just fill the sleeve spool with chunks of dry-ice, shrink'em and slide'm home. Un-screw the reddy-rod and then use the chunks for the next sleeve. There is no precision parts/tools or force needed. The only thing high-tech is using the telephone to find some dry-ice. Dry-ice is readily available (yellow pages).

N-Engines are designed to be re-sleeved, thats why they're sold with the overhaul kit. I recommend using the sleeves that come with the overhaul kit. I also recommend using the 0.090 castiron sleeve and 3-ring piston. You will haffta bore the block some to fit the much better 90 thou sleeve. That should make your machinist happier since you are going to INSIST upon using the N-Sleeves from the overhaul kit. (its your money)..... ...Dell
