My new 8n has sarted fine until today. Actually it started fine earlier. While plowing snow it started making a wierd grindeing sound all of a sudden. It sounded like it was from near the starter. I killed it started again and it ran fine until I was done. It is a new 12 volt conversion by someone else. I then wanted to adjust the alternator to tighten the belt. The wire fell of alternater(1 wire setup) I hooked it back up. Now when I try to start the starter spins but does not even attempt to turn the engine. I am an electrical dummy, so I need some help. Thanks again guys.

Thanks Dell. I have something to add. The guy who did the convert put a new starter button in on the dash. I will occationally bump it with my knee when I am turned around. Could this have caused my problem? I plan on putting a new one in back where it should go.

Kirk..... ....traditionally, (as designed by Ford) the 8N's BIG starter button is mounted down by the tranny shifter and is safety interlocked to ONLY start in neutral. It grounds the electrically HOT 3-terminal starter solenoid mounted on top the starter motor case.

Trying to re-start a running engine is hard on the starter bendix and you usually can hear the gears grind.

I refuse to guess why your starter pushbutton is mounted on the dash. I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife..... ....respectfully, Dell

I think I can guess why. It is jus easy to get it there. It is just a generic button switch. It sounds like me bumping the button while it is running probably caused my problem. Thanks for the help.

Kirk..... ...sounds like ya lost the starter bendix gear off the starter shaft. Gotta pull the starter for lookie-look. Tip: put a 5/16 NC nut on the 8" long starter screw so starter doesn't fall completely appart as you jiggle it out the hole. (oh yeah, ya gotta hold yer tongue juss sew) Recommend the new and improved "clutch" style starter drive.

And donnna worry about the missing starter gear stuff, Ford designed storage space in tranny for spare starter drive parts. (grin)..... ...Dell
