Best Hydraulic Rebuild Kit?

I'm rebuilding a complete 8n hydraulics to go into my 9n and looking for some recommendations on a quality rebuild kit.

I have everything out of the doner case and its clear that I will need to replace the piston and piston chamber attached to the lift cover (very rusty). This tractor sat for 18 yrs. and when I pulled the inspection covers, the cases were filled with water. Surprisingly, the lift pump cleaned up very well and so did the lift cover. The only permanent rust damage was to the piston and its cylinder.

Thanks guys,

Phil B.

Found these parts on Ebay. I'll watch them but don't think I need them. Good starting price. One of the shops is selling a "core" (no guarantee) hyd. pump for $75.

Any chance the cylinder from the 9n is salvageable? For that matter? will the 8n lift cover accept the 9n lift cylinder?? ( Dell? Zane? )

I just checked my dennis carpenter catalog as it was handy, and it lists a hyd cylinder 'complete'.. 1939-1952.. so they must be compatible.

If it is compatible and salvageable.. might save you some time and money. Just need the naa piston & o-ring/washer then.

Sounder..... ...my N-Ford MPC lists p/n 9N-510-D, cylinder, hydraulic lift, 39-52, all. But we all know that the NAA "O-ring" piston fits and is better than the 3-ring N-Piston..... ..Dell

Absolutely. I figured he could just swap out the empty cylinder that is on his 9n now, to the 8n lift cover that he is refurbing to drop in ( with pump ) to the 9n later.

That is.. if the 9n cylinder was salvageable. But yeah.. deffinately new naa piston and oring/washer.. sorry for the misunderstanding.

( Does anyone even make the steel ring & piston anymore? )

I have seen new rings for sale, but not sure about the piston itself. Seems higly probable, though.

Hey Phil;

All I can say is be prepared to spend some big $$$ because those parts are not cheap. Go ahead and get the NAA piston with the o-ring and leather back up washer for better holding. The lift cylinder will run you about $109. Then there's the pump. Yes, it may look fine, but you won't know if it's really worn without putting a micrometer or at least some dial calipers on it.

You need to measure the ID of the holes in the valve chambers and compare that to the OD of the pistons themselves. If the tractor has been sitting that long, i would dismantle the pump anyway to clean it out. If there is more than 0.004-6" difference between the measurements of a piston and it's corresponding valve chamber hole, both should probably be replaced which runs you $385!! Since there are no rings, seals or anything else, the pistons rely on a very very close tolerance fit into the valve chambers. When that clearance gets too big, you get a lot of leakage and it won't lift loads anymore.

There is a cheaper kit that gives you new pistons but not the valve chambers for about $275 i think. But you never know, you might get lucky and have everything work out without having to rebuild anything. Good luck.

Jeb

Jeb,

Wow, I knew I'd be in for around $300 minimum but I can see that figure growing if things don't work out in the measurement area. I may see if I can hone the lift cyclinder.

Another Idea is to check both the parts on the 9n and the 8n and see what will work in the 8n system...

Time is on my side with this project.

Thanks again,

Phil B.

If you have two pumps and lift covers to choose from, the 8N cylinder should be the same as the 9N if i'm not mistaken. Might want to take both of the pumps apart and see which set of pistons/valve chambers are closest in measuring and see if it still meets the 0.004" clearance replacement spec. I'm having to go all the way ($$ rebuild kit and NAA piston, honed cylinder) because my pistons and valve chambers were out anywhere from 0.007 to 0.009" clearance. In retrospect, i'm amazed it could lift anything at all!
