I've got a 48/49 8N that I have managed to rebuild-rewire and start using around here. Is there a reason why I can't just run regular 90 wt gear oil in the rear end, I can't find GL-1 anywhere. Or is there more to it's needs than viscosity?? -- Thanx in advance, ruint

Try this. Is there a Shell dealership nearby? They sell a product called Dentax mineral gear oil. You can get it in a 80w90 weight. It's a GL-1 rated oil. The universal tractor tranny hydraulic oil comes in several names, such as 134D(Ford), Permatran (MF), Hytran (Case-IH). They are all TDH (transmission, differential, hydraulic) oils. It's very light, so if your tractor leaks or your hydro pump is tired, it may not work well in the summer heat. The tired old pump won't be able to pump such a thin oil when hot. But it would be fine in the winter cold. So the answer is to use GL-1 mineral gear oil, or mineral based gear oil, same thing. Don't use GL-5 EP gear oil, the extreme pressure additives will wreck bronze/brass parts in the tranny. Oh, BTW, TDH oil is fine for all year use if your hydro pump can pump it in summer. It all depends on the condition of your pump, as to which oil to use.

Have you checked your Yellow Pages for "Oil and Lubricant Distributors"?

There's likely to be an outfit near you that has GL-1, as it apparantly has some industrial uses.

The main reason that 90w gear oil is not recommended for N's is because it also has to run a hydraulic pump. There is only one place the oil goes for the transmission, rear end & pump, so Ford recommended, in 1939, that 90w mineral oil be used. Later, they came out with the 134D oil. As noted below, some other brands have the same specs. Try searching the archives for more detailed reasons provided by folks much more knowledable than me as to why 90w gear oil won't work well.

If you live in Texas, Tractor Supply has GL-1 hydraulic oil and some rural Walmarts carry it as well. Any NAPA auto store should have it, or can order it as well. I cannot answer as to if 90w gear oil is the same as 90w hydraulic oil, as I am new to this myself, but I have not had trouble finding GL-1, just finding straight 90w mineral oil.

What was the NAPA part number for the 90wt GL-1? As I have stated before, around here Wal-Mart doesn't have it, TSC doesn't have it, and nobody will order the Penzoil 409 stuff unless i order a truck load because UPS won't ship it and truck freight is cost prohibitive. If there is a NAPA number for some stuff that will work (and is NOT the 134d) i'd like to get it.

If TSC doesn't callry the 5 gallon pail of generic 90wt gl-1 ( green label? ) then check to see if they have the blue labeled one.. that is marked for ford xmissions 39-52... that is also compatible.. etc.

All the TSC's around here only seem to carry 85-90wt transdraulic oil and 85-115wt and I think all of those are GL-5 or GL-4 rated anyways. I'm going to try the napa number as that seems the most painless.

BTW, what does the napa equivalent actually say on the label? Is "Mineral oil based gear oil" the same as "Mineral gear oil"?

Thanks

Sounds about right.

The side of the container should give the common equivalents..

I've seen some brands say 'pure mineral gear oil'.. etc.
Mineral gear lubricant.. etc..
