Have 7.45 volts on battery and have jumped directly on post coming out of starter but starter will still not turn. When trying to start tractor with button starter solonoid just makes chattering noise. Some ideas would be greatly appreciated.A starter is not cheap so i dont want to waste money replacing things that dont need to be.Thanks in advance.Sorry tractor is 52 8n original 6v system first time for any problems like this.

One more thing... check that battery voltage while hitting the starter.. if it drops lower than 4volts.. battery may be very discharged.. but still showing a high no-load voltage.

Good advice on the starter drive. If it is hung up.. Bj gave good advice.. rigorously rock the tractor in 4th gear. If you have to pull the stasrter, and it is still locked in the ring gear.. starter will come out in pieces... So if you think it is hung int he ring gear.. do everything you think you can to get it un-hung first.

Might even pull the spark plugs to relieve compression.. ( also check to make sure they aren't hydraulically locked.. easy to check with a stalk of grass... Dip in spark plug hole to see if it comes back covered in gas, oil or coolant..

What you report is consistent with the bendix having jamed on the ring gear. In fact that is likely. If'n it were mine I would first try rocking it loose by putting the machine in fourth gear and rocking the rear tires with the key off. When/if that didn't free it up next step is pull the starter which you would do in any event. When/if you do pull the starter don't forget to put one nut on the long bolt so it doesn't come aprart in your hand.

Your mileage may vary

Good idea to jump dierctly to the starter; that eliminates bad cables, dirty clamps etc from possible causes. Remove the band from the starter & check out the brushes. If they look ok, I'd go ahead and pull the starter & take it to the local rebuild shop & get them to let you know what it needs. Let us know if you need some tips on pulling the starter.
